El Paisaje Cultural es definido en el Plan Nacional de Paisaje Cultural como el "resultado de la interacción en el tiempo de las personas y el medio natural, cuya expresión es un territorio percibido y valorado por sus cualidades culturales, producto de un proceso y soporte de la identidad de una comunidad". El paisaje cultural es una realidad dinámica y compleja que se gesta desde un paisaje natural por la intervención de un grupo humano: la cultura es el agente, y el área natural es el medio. El paisaje cultural es el resultado de esa transformación (Sauer, Carl O.). Así, el paisaje ha pasado a formar parte del patrimonio de los Estados y se ha convertido en un bien cultural que hay que fomentar, preservar, proteger y gestionar. En esta obra se abordan tres grandes grupos de paisajes: agrarios, urbanos e industriales, desde una perspectiva geográfica.

Varios autores recogen en este libro experiencias de investigación para analizar “paisajes culturales” en España y América a través de casos concretos a diferentes escalas y en ámbitos geográficos distintos pero con un pasado común. Se muestran formas de utilización de la naturaleza por el hombre y de ordenación del territorio bajo modelos productivos y estructuras políticas cambiantes. A la vez, se subraya la mirada de pintores y las narraciones de escritores que acentúan los valores patrimoniales del paisaje y contribuyen a su calificativo de “cultural”. Los casos estudiados identifican dinámicas del paisaje, analogías y diferencias en su tratamiento y gestión, y oportunidades para la generación de riqueza, sobre todo a través del turismo, la ordenación del territorio y la educación. También se señalan tendencias que aspiran a incrementar el interés de la sociedad por los “paisajes culturales” como señas de identidad colectiva y elementos integrantes del patrimonio que necesitan, por lo tanto, protección y tratamiento especial. Todo se enmarca en un contexto institucional cada vez más propicio al diseño de políticas específicas de paisaje, fundamentalmente después del reconocimiento internacional de la figura de “paisaje cultural” por la UNESCO y por el Convenio Europeo del Paisaje.

Landscape and Identity in the Modern Basque Country, 1800 to 1936 studies the relationship between landscape and modern identities in the Basque Country. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines cultural history and geography, it analyses the process of historical construction of the Basque landscape, highlighting its multiple political, social and cultural meanings. The book is divided into two parts: the first examines the discourses, images and representations of the Basque landscape; the second examines landscape practices through tourism, hiking and mountaineering. Focusing on the Basque case but establishing numerous connections with comparable phenomena in Western Europe, the book demonstrates that the landscape became a structuring element insofar as it helped shape individual identities while participating in the creation of social links. This book examines the processes of identity construction "from below" by means of new interpretative tools, such as the experience of landscape.
