Bones, Behaviour and Belief
Author: Gunnel Ekroth
Publisher: Paul Astroms
ISBN: 9789179160623
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
"The importance of the zooarchaeological evidence as a source for ritual practices in ancient Greece is gradually becoming widely recognized. Animal bones form the only category of evidence for Greek cult which is constantly significantly increasing, and they can complement and elucidate the information provided by texts, inscriptions and images. This volume brings together sixteen contributions exploring ritual practices and animal bones from different chronological and geographical perspectives, foremost ancient Greece in the historical period, but also in the Bronze Age and as early as the Neolithic period, as well as Anatolia, France and Scandinavia, providing new empirical evidence from a number of major sanctuaries and cult-places. On a methodological level, the complexity of identifying ritual activity from the zooarchaeological evidence is a recurrent theme, as is the prominence of local variation visible in the bone material, suggesting that the written sources and iconography may offer simplified or idealized versions of the rituals actually performed. Although zooarchaeology needs to and should be integrated with other kinds of sources, the independent study of the bones in an unbiased manner is of utmost importance, as the bones can provide a different "reality" than that encountered in our other sources."--Publisher's website.

Placing the Gods
Author: Susan E. Alcock
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
No one disputes the centrality of cult activity in the lives of individuals and communities in ancient Greece. The significance of where people worshipped their gods has been far less acknowledged. In 1884 Francois de Polignac argued that the placing of cult centres played a major part inestablishing the concept of the city-state in archaic Greece. The essays in this collection, headed by that of de Polignac himself in which he re-assesses his position, critically examine the social and political importance of sanctuary placement, not only by re-examining the case of the archaicGreece discussed by de Polignac, but by extending analysis both back to Mycenaean times and onwards to Greece under Roman occupation. These essays reveal something of the complexity of relations between religion and politics in ancient Greece, demonstrating how vital factors such as tradition, gender relations, and cult identity were in creating and maintaining the religious mapping of the Greek countryside.

The Franks in the Aegean
Author: Peter Lock
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317899725
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 415
Book Description
Despite the enormous literature on the crusades, the Frankish states in the Aegean (set up in the wake of the Fourth Crusade in 1204) have been seriously neglected by modern historians. Yet their history is both compelling in itself - these were the last crusader states to be set up in the eastern Mediterranean and among the last to fall to the Turks - and also valuable for the case study they offer in medieval colonialism. Peter Lock surveys the social, economic, religious and cultural aspects of the region within a broad political framework, and explores the clash of cultures between the Frankish interlopers and their Byzantine subjects. This is a major addition to crusading studies.

The Archaeology of Medieval Greece
Author: Peter Lock
Publisher: Oxbow Books Limited
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Greece's importance in the Middle Ages is often neglected by those more concerned with its Prehistoric or Classical past. But, as the colony of Frankish and Italian maritime Empires and as a haven for the Orthodox Church after the fall of Constantinople, the landscape of Greece is covered in a profusion of Medieval art and architecture. This text brings this heritage back to public attention.
