Book Description
This case study gives an overview about an interdisciplinary, multi-method PhD project in which I studied the mutual relationships between news media and the stock market from various research perspectives. Within three years of research, I conducted six empirical studies with unique datasets that combined qualitative and quantitative research methods both within and across studies. Theoretically and methodologically, the studies are grounded in the field of economics and communication science. Recapitulating the process of the research project, this case study reports on the unique research designs of each study, the methods employed, research practicalities as well as the challenges faced, and the lessons learned. In terms of methodologies, this case study covers interview and survey studies, content analyses (automated and manual) as well as time-series analyses and network analyses.

Book Description
"This dissertation provides insights in explaining the interrelationships between news media and the stock market. First, the results show that first-hand economic news seems to induce stronger, and more immediate stock market reactions than already known public information. Second, public economic news appears to be related to smaller and more delayed stock market reactions. Third, daily news coverage about stocks seems to lag behind too much to be able to drive stock prices. Fourth, public corporate communication was found to affect intraday stock market reactions (e.g., quarterly earnings, new product), while, at the same time, market expectations appear to play a crucial role in how financial news gets interpreted and acted upon by market participants as well. Fifth, with regard to news characteristics, negative emotions and negative sentiment have been found to induce a downward trend in the stock prices, while relevant news and expert opinions seem to drive the stock market prices up. In addition, corporate news dealing with IPOs was seen to relate to the flotation performance of IPOs. Lastly, while social media have been identified to provide relevant financial information for the financial markets, the financial information system itself was found to be self-constitutive and self-referential. In line with this, a tendency of speculative reporting -or simply follow-up reporting - seems to have become common practice in online financial news. In this vein, this dissertation has made a crucial contribution to the field of financial communication, but also to related disciplines such as finance or economics."--Samenvatting auteur.

Book Description
A desire to make a profit on investment has been a prominent motivational factor in financial investments. The idea of growing with a blue chip firm or an emerging start-up has allured both individual investor(s) and large investing firms alike. One of the financial market areas that gives such opportunity to become part of something bigger is the stock market. Across the globe, stock exchanges become the medium through which billions of stocks are traded on daily basis. Nevertheless, stock market volatility always challenges a seasoned investor to find new ways to invest into stocks that will be profitable in near future. These challenges are equally important for financial firms that are building algorithms for creating profitable stock portfolio. With the advent of social media and similar resonance in digital news media, we have witnessed huge data explosion and this has also opened new opportunities to harvest these data into information for profitable stock trading. In this research, I have performed analysis of more than 8.5 million news article and twitter messages to determine relationship between stock price and media sentiments. Using novel data visualization and Natural Language Processing techniques, I have implemented novel data visualizations such as frequency of news items and other related events affecting the company share price.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and digital media are having a significant impact on the way people communicate and fulfil their socio-economic, emotional and material needs. These technologies are also being harnessed by businesses for various purposes including distribution and selling of goods, retailing of consumer services, customer relationship management, and influencing consumer behaviour by employing digital marketing practices. This book considers this, as it examines the practice and research related to digital and social media marketing.

Book Description
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the mechanisms of fake news consumption and its further contagion process over social media in news videos. The first essay examines if the truthfulness of contained statements matters for viewership performance of news videos. This study constructs a panel data and finds that, in large media firms' news videos, a false statement is associated with an increase in news video viewership, whereas a true and half-true statement is not. The second essay conducts online experiments to verify the causality of a false statement on viewership and understand its theoretical mechanisms. This study finds that, with short news video clips from large media firms presented by popular figures, a false statement increases participants' viewing and sharing intentions when it is aligned with their political opinions, and confirmation bias is one important mechanism of the observed effect. However, with short clips presented by an unknown person, the positive effect of a false statement is limited to participants perceiving a false statement as true. The third essay investigates social media contagion process of news video viewing in relation with false statements. This study develops an indirect network model with large-scale regional television viewership data and finds a positive effect of viewers' social media sharing on viewership. The observed effect is driven by drawing more viewers and interacts with false statements differently in straight news and opinion news. These three essays help better understand news consumption in the current era of fake news and social media, hence contribute to addressing related managerial and societal challenges.
