Cordial Relations Between Africa and America in the Twenty-First Century
Author: Lazarus Jawiyambe
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1532042868
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Since the 1960s, the United States of America and African nations have had a rocky relationship. Lazarus Jawiyambe explores why the U.S.A. has so often been at odds with the continent. Many times, he argues, the relationship has suffered because of misunderstandings. The results of these misunderstandings, however, have been profound, with many African nations opting to mainly deal with other powers, including the former Soviet Union, the European Union, and China. Both sides, the author says, would be well-served if they could work together for the good of all. Africa could be an even more vital economic and strategic partner if American leaders treated African nations the same way they do Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. To move the relationship to a higher, more constructive level, the leaders of America and African countries must engage in regular dialogue and meetings, the author says. No matter where you live, youll be enlightened by how American and African leaders could improve life for everyone with the insights, analysis, and recommendations in Cordial Relations between Africa and America in the Twenty-First Century.

Nigeria - U.S. Trade Relations in the Non-Oil Sector
Author: Gbadebo Olusegun Odularu
Publisher: Universal-Publishers
ISBN: 1599427036
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 199
Book Description
In as much as trade fosters economic development, it also exacerbates poverty, especially in the sub Saharan African (SSA) countries. Against this backdrop, this study will increase our understanding of the estimation of non-oil commodity trade flows between Nigeria and the U.S. More specifically, the study aims to analysing the impact of African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) on the U.S. imports of non-oil products from Nigeria. The research objectives are woven around the following questions: - What is the nature of Nigeria's and the U.S.'s foreign trade policies with particular reference to non-oil trade? - What are the patterns, magnitude, composition and trends in Nigeria-US non-oil trade? - Which economic sectors possess greatest potential for fostering trade in the non-oil sector between Nigeria and the U.S.? - What is the impact of AGOA on the diversification and growth of non-oil exports in Nigeria? This study adopts the difference-in-differences (DiD) as the research methodology. Within the Nigerian context, DiD intuitively compares the trends in imports of AGOA non-oil products before and after AGOA with the pattern of imports of non-AGOA non-oil products before and after AGOA, controlling for the timing of AGOA, import capacity and economic performance of both U.S. and Nigeria. Using the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Integrated Data Base (IDB), the empirical analysis reveals that AGOA non-oil products increased by as much as 182 percent with the implementation of AGOA, while the non-AGOA non-oil products fell by 76 percent. Conclusively, AGOA has had a considerably positive impact on the Nigerian non-oil sector at the general level. The policy implication of the empirical analysis is the need for the U.S. to expand the product coverage and opportunities of AGOA non-oil products in order for AGOA to achieve its objectives of using trade as a potent tool for promoting economic growth in SSA.

Global Energy Security and American Hegemony
Author: Doug Stokes
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 0801897432
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
This analysis of the United States and energy security examines the close relationship between US military supremacy in oil-rich regions and America's maintenance of global power. Energy security generally evokes thoughts of American intervention in the Middle East to protect US interests in that region's oil-rich fields. Doug Stokes and Sam Raphael move beyond that framework to consider US actions in Latin America, Central Asia, and Africa. Drawing on State and Defense Department records and other primary sources and previous scholarship, they show how US foreign policy since World War II has sought to maintain a global energy security regime that supports the nation's allies while maintaining American hegemony. Stokes and Raphael explain how US intervention in energy-rich states insulates and stabilizes those nations' transnationally oriented actors and political economies and why American oil diversification strategy strengthens the country's position against rivals in the global capitalist system. They argue that counterinsurgency aid and other types of coercive US statecraft protect the recipient states from an array of potentially revolutionary armed and unarmed internal social forces, thereby securing the energy supplies of nations deemed strategically important to the United States or its allies. Clear and accessible, this cutting-edge contemporary policy analysis will engage scholars of US foreign policy and international relations as well as policymakers grappling with the importance of energy security in today's world.
