"Since coins are more durable thannotes and do not need replacement asoften, many nations have replacedlower-denomination notes with coinsto obtain a financial benefit. GAO hasestimated the annual net benefit tothe U.S. government of replacing the$1 note with a $1 coin four times overthe past 20 years, most recently inApril 2000. Asked to update itsestimate, GAO (1) estimated the netbenefit to the government ofreplacing the $1 note with a $1 coinand (2) examined other effectsstakeholders suggested such areplacement could have. To performits work, GAO constructed aneconomic model and interviewedofficials from the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department, the U.S.Secret Service, outside experts, andofficials from Canada and the UnitedKingdom. To determine the effects onstakeholders, GAO interviewedofficials from industries andorganizations that might be affectedby changes to currency. As in the past, GAO's analysisindicates that replacing the $1 notewith a $1 coin would provide afinancial benefit to the government ifproduction of the $1 note ceased.GAO previously recommendedreplacement of the $1 note andcontinues to support thisrecommendation. George Washington on Coins and Currency
Author: Heinz Tschachler
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476681104
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 247
Book Description
George Washington is the most popular subject on coins, medals, tokens, paper money and postage stamps in America. Attempts to eliminate one-dollar bills from circulation, replacing them with coins, have been unsuccessful. Americans' reluctance to part with their "Georges" are beyond rational considerations but tap into deep-felt emotions. To discard one-dollar bills means discarding the metaphorical Father of His Country. Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first Secretary of the Treasury, said that monetary tokens were "vehicles of useful impressions." This numismatic history of George Washington traces the persistence of his image on American currency. These images are mostly from the late 18th-century. This book also offers a close look at the pictorial tradition in which these images are rooted.
