The End of Tradition?
Author: Nezar Alsayyad
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134437110
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
Rooted in real world observations, this book questions the concept of tradition - whether contemporary globalization will prove its demise or whether there is a process of simultaneous ending and renewing. In his introduction, Nezar Alsayyad discusses the meaning of the word 'tradition' and the current debates about the 'end of tradition'. Thereafter the book is divided into three parts. The three chapters in part I explore the inextricable link between 'tradition' and 'modern', revealing the geopolitical implications of this link. Part II looks at tradition as a process of invention and here the three chapters are all concerned with the making of landscapes and landscape myths, showing how the spectacle of history can be aestheticized and naturalized. Finally, Part III shows how traditionis a regime, programmed and policed and how it has been deployed, resisted, and reworked through hegemonic struggles that seek to create both built environments and citizen-subjects.

Reapproaching Borders
Author: Sandra Marlene Sufian
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780742546394
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
Territorial borders, identity borders, and many other kinds of social and cultural borders are constantly questioned in Israel-Palestine. Reapproaching Borders: New Perspectives on the Study of Israel-Palestine explores the concept of borders, how they are imagined and actualized in this deeply contested land. The book focuses on the 'implicate relations' between Palestinian Arabs and Jews, providing new insights into the origins and dynamics of the conflicts between them. Emphasizing the history of the non-elite members of both communities, the book sees the relations between Jews and Palestinian Arabs as embedded and reflected in areas of daily living, such as in the spheres of architecture, commerce, health sexuality, and the courts. Using the voices of the new generation of scholars, Reapproaching Borders demonstrates the continued saliency of older themes such as ownership and rights to the land, but as they intersect with the newer areas of inquiry, such as sexual identity politics and spatial relations.

Tea
Author: K.C. Willson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401123268
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 780
Book Description
Tea is a unique crop and, incidentally, a very interesting and attractive one. The tea bush, its cultivation and harvesting do not fit into any typical cropping pattern. Moreover, its processing and marketing are specific to tea. Thus the Tea Industry stands apart and constitutes a self contained entity. This is reflected in the title given to this book, Tea: Cultivation to consumption, and its treatment of the subject. The book is logically planned - starting with the plant itself and finishing with the traditional'cuppa'. Every aspect of tea production is covered, inevitably some in greater detail than others. However, it gives an authentic and comprehensive picture of the tea industry. The text deals in detail with cultural practices and research, where desirable, on a regional basis. The technology of tea cultivation and processing has been developed within the industry, aided by applied research which was largely financed by the tea companies themselves. This contributed to a technically competent industry but tended to bypass the more academic and fundamental investigations which might bring future rewards. The sponsorship of research has now widened and the range and depth of tea research has increased accordingly. The editors and authors of this book have played their part in these recent developments which are well reported in the book.

Follow Me: Walking with Jesus through the Gospels
Author: William C. Mattison, III
Publisher: Emmaus Road Publishing
ISBN: 1645853403
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
When we read the Gospels, we learn about what Jesus did and how He reveals God the Father to us. We read about His interactions with tax collectors, fishermen, or hospitable women and take away lessons on how to act (or not act). Yet the Gospel encounters also reveal how Jesus longs to speak directly to our hearts. Follow Me: Walking with Jesus through the Gospel serves as an invitation to deepen our relationship with the living God by providing imaginative access to various characters’ encounters with Jesus. Drawing from Scripture and supplementing with questions for further reflection and study, Follow Me will deepen a reader’s understanding of who Jesus is and how He sees His beloved sons and daughters—not just those recalled in Scripture but each of us in the present day.

Tractates Ma'aser Seni, Hallah, 'Orlah, and Bikkurim
Author: Heinrich W. Guggenheimer
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110906759
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 684
Book Description
This volume concludes the edition, translation, and commentary of the first order of the "Jerusalem Talmud". It contains four small but important tractates. The first, Ma‘aser Šeni, deals with Second Tithe (Deut. 14:22-27) and the fourth-year fruit of a newly planted tree (Lev. 19:24). This is sanctified food, to be consumed by the laity at the holy precinct, for which redemption is expressly authorized. The tractate deals in large part with the problems of redemption of dedicated food. In addition, there is a long section on the interpretation of dreams, and a detailed description of the ceremony of presentation of the tithe in the Temple. The second tractate, Hallah, details the application of the general rules of heave to the Cohen’s part of any bread dough. The third tractate, ‘Orlah, the fruit of a newly planted tree during the first three years (Lev. 19:23), treats this as paradigm for all food whose usufruct is forbidden, and most of the tractate discusses the problems that may arise if any such food is not immediately disposed of. The last tractate, Bikkurim, describes the rules for selection and presentation of First Fruits in the Temple on or after Pentecost. The rite is given in detail, with an excursus on the honor due elders. A first appendix shows the position of the Tosephta as intermediary between Yerushalmi and Babli tradition, with a distinct slant towards Babylonian positions. A second appendix tries to identify the main authors of the tractates of this first order.
