I formally met Mahiya and Cabren the Spring of 2018, when my brother, their Papa passed away. I knew their mother was incarcerated. I asked them, without thinking, how she was doing. One of them said "do you know where my mom is"? I explained to them that I did know and it was okay. I told them I worked with ladies incarcerated and I understand how they must feel. They talked about their visits, phone calls and the letters they share with their mom. Mahiya spoke about how uncomfortable she was discussing her mom with others. She said they were teased at school when their mom first went to prison. I promised them I would continue to stay in touch and was very happy they were in my life. We continued to communicate over the summer and the rest is history! The stigma that a child carries when their parent is incarcerated, is far too much for any child to deal with. Thomas Toren experienced more horror, loss, and change in his life than most. When he was just six, his mother was arrested for 'Rassenschande' and imprisoned by the Nazis. Young Thomas would not see her again until he was almost thirty. He did not know who his father was, and the man who raised him was cold and distant. He was expelled from two German primary schools because of his stepfather's Jewish surname. This project began several years ago as a simple family history and legacy to leave to my sons and grandchildren. Every family and generation has their unique stories to share. It’s sad but true that many of these stories are lost as the participants die. We have all heard about the same old stories from the family’s older folks many times and got bored with the reruns of some. I hope to preserve these tales and histories. Perhaps a harsher example is the loss of the Holocaust survivors’ oral histories and the World War II veterans’ stories in history.
