Book Description
Excerpt from Unofficial Proceedings in Connection With the Twenty-Fourth National Encampment, Grand Army of the Republic, Held in Boston, Week August 11-16, 1890: Issued Under the Direction of the Executive Committee His grandfather, Richard Devens, was conspicuous for his patriotism at the outbreak of the Revolution. He was selected by his fellow-citizens as one of the committee of safety, to, provide arms and ammunition for the patriots of 1775. Ou the evening preceding the battle of Bunker Hill, after the departure of the troops under Prescott from Cambridge, with true military fore sight he went to General Tani, in command of the Americans, and urged that Stark's and Reed's regiments of New Hampshire troops at Medford be ordered to the support of Prescott. Gen. \vard was reluctant to issue the order, but through the persistent efforts of Devens and others it was finally given on the morning of the seventeenth of June, but it did not reach Stark till nearly noon. The world is greatly indebted to Richard Devens for this forecasting of the needs of the hour; for had not those regiments been at the rail fence on Bunker Hill, it is altogether probable that Prescott's force would have been overwhelmed at the beginning of the battle. Book Description
In recent years, Civil War veterans have emerged from historical obscurity. Inspired by recent interest in memory studies and energized by the ongoing neorevisionist turn, a vibrant new literature has given the lie to the once-obligatory lament that the postbellum lives of Civil War soldiers were irretrievable. Despite this flood of historical scholarship, fundamental questions about the essential character of Civil War veteranhood remain unanswered. Moreover, because work on veterans has often proceeded from a preoccupation with cultural memory, the Civil War’s ex-soldiers have typically been analyzed as either symbols or producers of texts. In The War Went On: Reconsidering the Lives of Civil War Veterans, fifteen of the field’s top scholars provide a more nuanced and intimate look at the lives and experiences of these former soldiers. Essays in this collection approach Civil War veterans from oblique angles, including theater, political, and disability history, as well as borderlands and memory studies. Contributors examine the lives of Union and Confederate veterans, African American veterans, former prisoners of war, amputees, and ex-guerrilla fighters. They also consider postwar political elections, veterans’ business dealings, and even literary contests between onetime enemies and among former comrades.

Book Description
This book will captivate readers interested in the legacy of the Civil War, the role of military veterans after they return to civilian life, and the fight against racism in America. Steven A. Goldman looks at the contentious post-Civil War era from the perspective of that special breed, Union soldiers who lived by the bayonet and survived to carry on the fight for equality in the decades to come. He explores the root causes of this historic contest, the changing attitudes of northern servicemen with respect to the Civil War’s purpose, and the psychological effect of involvement in what, from hindsight, was an unfinished work in the cause of freedom and equality for all Americans. Relying on unpublished letters and other primary sources, Goldman uses the veterans’ words and actions to depict their steadfast struggle to preserve the memory and understanding of why the war was fought, and to confront the implications of remembrance, commemoration and reconciliation for America's future.
