Book Description
New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller explores how people are changed by meeting Jesus personally—and how we can be changed encountering him today. The people who met Jesus Christ in person faced the same big life questions we face today. Like most of us, the answers handed down to them didn’t seem to work in the real world. But when they met Jesus, things immediately started to change for them. It seems he not only had the answers—he was the answer. In Encounters with Jesus, Timothy Keller shows how the central events and meetings in Jesus’ life can change our own lives forever. "Keller's work belongs on the bookshelf of every serious Bible student." —Examiner "Keller has mined the gold from these texts of Scripture, and any Christian is bound to have their minds expanded and hearts stirred." —Grace for Sinners

God Moments
Author: Andy Otto
Publisher: Ave Maria Press
ISBN: 159471648X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
Where do you seek God? Are you waiting for him to appear in a monumental, life-altering event? In God Moments, Catholic blogger Andy Otto shows you how to discover the unexpected beauty of God’s presence in the story of ordinary things and in everyday routines like preparing breakfast or walking in the woods. Drawing on the Ignatian principles of awareness, prayer, and discernment, Otto will help you discover the transforming power of God’s presence in your life and better understand your place in the world. Andy Otto found God’s presence in surprising moments during his life—when, as a Jesuit scholastic, he taught children in Jamaica and also as he discerned the call to marriage with his wife. By combining elements of Ignatian spirituality with the lessons that came from his experiences, Otto identified three practices that helped him find God in all things: Awareness—Gain an understanding that God is present in the ordinary messiness of our lives such as battle with depression or sharing in the struggle of a friend. Prayer—Develop a prayer life using Ignatian practices such as asking for a morning grace and examining how your prayer was answered at the end of the day. That way you can focus on a personal relationship with God that finds everyday physical activities such as making a meal as an opportunity to talk to him. Discernment—The more you are aware of God’s presence and draw closer to him in prayer, the better you can learn how to plug into God’s narrative of the world in a way that enables you to participate in the divine story through the use of your gifts and talents. With God Moments as a guide, you’ll have a better understanding of how to seek personal wholeness in the reality of God’s presence in the ordinary and learn to accept his invitation to participate in his transformation of the world.

Neighbors and Wise Men
Author: Tony Kriz
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 0849964032
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
Hearing from God is extraordinary. But the circumstances He uses to reveal Himself may be more ordinary than we think. Neighbors and Wise Men introduces captivating dialogues and unexpected moments with God that go beyond the confines of a conventional religious system and offer the chance for powerful life transformation. Get to know Tony Kriz (known by many as "Tony the Beat Poet" in Donald Miller's best-selling book Blue Like Jazz) through his real-life conversations and experiences that prove that God can and will use anyone and anything— from Muslim lands to antireligious academics to post-Christian cultures—to make Himself known. Through his own prodigal-son backstory and return to faith, Tony presents biblical truth in a conversational, but bold light that offers readers the courage to open their eyes to the unlikely encounters that are all around us every day; chance run-ins that turn out to be anything but chance. Have we limited God's ability to speak in our world today? Have we relegated God's creative voice to the select persons who share our particular religious system? Kriz himself felt like he was falling out of faith until non-Christians encouraged him to "fall toward Christ."

Who Am I And Who Says I Am Who I Am
Author: Pastor Albert J. Harris Jr.
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1098058593
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
Once again, God continues to remind me that my life is a lifetime of untold stories that I must share with the world. It is God who inspires the stories for me to tell to the world. As God was preparing my mind to write this story, I personally had experience many of the things that I talk about in this book. There is one thing that I have accepted as I wrote this book, and that is, "For in God we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28). I'm just saying that God is the source of our very existence. This is why, I practice believing "that I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13). I want you to know that what God does for one person, he can do the same for you. That is the purpose of this book: to give hope to those who are hopeless and helpless. I believe that we need to get to know ourselves because we don't know ourselves as well as we think we do. But I know someone who knows all of us better than we know ourselves (Jer. 1:5). Let me encourage and inspire someone that the one who knows you better that you know yourselves is Jesus. He also has your best interest at heart. I recommend that we consider submitting, and surrendering to him because he is the life that we've all been searching for (John 1:1–14).So it is, my brothers and my sisters, when you come to know who Jesus is, you will also come to know who you are. When God made you, he made the best you there is. So it is up to you not to lose hope nor your self-esteem, but you ought to continue your pursuit of being the best that you can be with God's help. Jesus gives this hope to all those who will believe and trust him. In John 10:10b, Jesus says, "I come that you have life, and have life more abundantly." My brothers and my sisters, it is my prayer that you be the best that you can be with the resources that God provides, for all of us. Every day that you wake up, it is another for improvement in your life. Please don't let life's opportunities pass you by, but start taking advantage of every opportunity that comes your way because life is too short to pass it up.Stop underestimating your worth. God said that everything that he made was good and very good that includes you and me, amen (Gen. 1:31).With much love, I send these pages of my life out into the world with the hope that someone's life will be the better. Also, I want to remind someone that their life also is a book, whether it's open are closed, it can be shared with the world. It's a wonderful thing to know that we reap what we sow. In other words, what goes around comes around. Amen. When we invest in others, we also invest in ourselves (Gal. 6:7–8).May God always bless and keep you.

Cultural Conversions
Author: Heather J. Sharkey
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 0815652208
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 348
Book Description
The essays in this volume study cultural conversions that arose from missionary activities in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Both Catholic and Protestant missionaries effected changes that often went beyond what they had intended, sometimes backfiring against the missions. These changes entailed wrenching political struggles to redefine families, communities, and lines of authority. This volume’s contributors examine the meanings of "conversion" for individuals and communities in light of loyalties and cultural traditions, and consider how conversion, as a process, was often ambiguous. The history of Christian missions emerges from these pages as an integral part of world history that has stretched beyond professing Christians to affect the lives of peoples who have consciously rejected or remained largely unaware of missionary appeals.
