This volume contains the proceedings of the 8th International PhD Student Workshop on Service Life and Durability of Reinforced Concrete Structures that was held in Marne-la-Vallée, France, on September the 26th and 27th 2016. Topics discussed in the book are related to durability performance of reinforced concrete, service life modelling, prevention, protection and repair. Reinforced concrete structures may prove to be very durable, however, their gradual degradation over time impairing both serviceability and structural safety is still a matter of great practical concern in view of the large economic consequences for assessment, maintenance and repair. Corrosion of steel reinforcement is considered to be the most detrimental process responsible for structural deterioration. Many studies are in progress to develop a comprehensive engineering approach for assessment of the initiation and the propagation period of corrosion in both uncracked and cracked concrete. Modelling of chloride penetration and carbonation has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, however, there is still much debate on several essential aspects such as the chloride threshold level. ASR, and acid, sulphate and frost attack and other mechanisms remain important areas of study. In addition, the interaction between different degradation mechanisms requires further understanding. The worskhop was organised under the auspices of RILEM EAC (Educational Activities Committee), with the aim to bring together young researchers in the field of durability of concrete.

The book, ADVANCES IN BUILDING ENGINEERING RESEARCH, has been conceived as a result of the efforts of some of the most relevant researchers in the field of building engineering at a national level. Nowadays, nobody doubts that we are immersed in a process of change and technological innovation that fully affects the industry, and the construction sector is no stranger to it. Advances in technology and its application to everyday life, the excessive consumption of natural resources and the need to apply circular economy strategies, or the development of new sustainable construction materials, are some of the issues addressed in this book. Thus, in line with European guidelines and the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the 2030 Agenda, the European Union has established a roadmap that promotes responsible economic growth. It is for this reason that it is essential to address new ways of conceiving building in our country, and for this reason, it has been essential to have various collaborators from renowned Universities and Research Centres that have wanted to be part of this work. Undoubtedly, all the original research presented here deals with the process of innovation in building and is linked to the common paradigm of sustainability. However, despite the complexity of some of the topics covered in this compendium, the authors have tried to unify the criteria of academic rigour and agile and accessible presentation. For this reason, it is understood that this book is suitable both for doctoral students and researchers, as well as for people interested in popularising science with a basic training. This is perhaps the strong point of this work, which has been polished as a result of the criticisms received from all those colleagues who have been kind enough to read the final document and help to improve it. We would also like to thank all the authors who have responded to our call and have kindly contributed their excellent research to the creation of this book. The works that make up the different Chapters have been selected through a blind peer review process and are the result of the wide-ranging concerns and issues that are of concern to building professionals in the year 2024. Until recently, engineering materials could be characterised successfully using relatively simple testing procedures. As materials technology advances, interest is growing in materials possessing complex meso-, micro- and nano-structures, which to a large extent determine their physical properties and behaviour. The purposes of materials modelling are many - optimisation, investigation of failure, simulation of production processes, to name a few. Modelling and characterisation are closely intertwined, increasingly so as the complexity of the material increases. Characterisation, in essence, is the connection between the abstract material model and the real-world behaviour of the material in question. Characterisation of complex materials therefore may require a combination of experimental techniques and computation. There is ample evidence about the negative effects business activity of all types can have on the provision of human rights. Equally, there can be little doubt economic development, usually driven through business activity and trade, is necessary for any state to provide the institutions and infrastructure necessary to secure and provide human rights for their citizens. The United Nations and businesses recognise this tension and are collaborating to effect change in business behaviours through voluntary initiatives such as the Global Compact and John Ruggie’s Guiding Principles. Yet voluntary approaches are evidently failing to prevent human rights violations and there are few alternatives in law for affected communities to seek justice. This book seeks to robustly challenge the current status quo of business approaches to human rights in order to develop meaningful alternatives in an attempt to breech the gap between the realities of business and human rights and its discourse.
