This case study describes a pilot project undertaken to demonstrate the usefulness of two tools (life cycle assessment, LCA, and design for environment, DfE) for designing products with better environmental performance. The study first introduces the concepts of LCA and DfE and reviews the project organization, scope, and methodology. It then presents the results of the project and the associated peer review process. The final section discusses the implications of the LCA and the potential for improving the environmental performance. The product studied was the Nortel M7310 business telephone, and the LCA study examined the material & energy flows and the environmental releases associated with its manufacture, distribution, use, and disposal/recycling. The examination of potential improvement compared the baseline impact results with those of a telephone using new keypad technology, a thin-walled housing, and different end-of-life options (shredding versus smelting).
