Book Description
It is the objective of this study to assess the feasibility of new or novel underground haulage equipment for transporting personnel and supplies. The study analyzes novel equipment and conventional haulage systems to determine their relative impact on productivity and the cost per ton that is attributable to this segment of the mining operation. Novel equipment in its current design can potentially alleviate many of the personnel and supply problems encountered in United States coal mines. A review of rail haulage systems and European underground mining provides the basis for the introduction of three novel haulage systems: monorail, floor-mounted trapped rail haulage, and chairlifts. It was determined that monorail and floor-mounted trapped rail haulage systems exhibit the highest potential for domestic utilization with the floor-mounted system already in use in one Pennsylvania mine. Monorail haulage equipment along with conventional battery powered rubber-tired equipment and two rail haulage systems were theoretically applied to five different mine sizes. Each system was then reviewed on an economic, operational, maintenance, and safety basis. From each standpoint, the monorail compared favorably with the other haulage systems. MSHA personnel reviewed the available technical and performance data, theorizing that the inherently safe design of trapped rail haulage equipment should prevent the need for any new regulations that would pertain to the equipment. Industry spokesmen exhibited interest in determining how trapped rail haulage equipment could benefit their mining operations

Book Description
Excerpt from The Underground Haulage of Coal by Wire Ropes: Including the System of Wire Rope Tramways as a Means of Transportation for Mining Products; A Practical Essay Written for John a Roebling's Sons Co; Of Trenton, N. J In the present little volume we offer to our patrons, mining engineers, and to all interested in the transportation of coal and other mining products, a collection of such useful, practical and theoretical information as will be of assistance in planning appropriate machinery for hauling and hoisting. We have refrained from filling the book with pictures and fancy sketches, and include only a series of carefully selected plans, representing the executed and approved conveying systems operated at the present day in the best American and English collieries. It was originally our intention to confine this treatise solely to underground haulage, but while preparing the same we received so many inquiries about wire rope tramways that we considered the subject but incompletely treated without describing this method of over ground transportation, which in many mining districts already plays an important part, and promises with every year to become more and more extended. Book Description
This comprehensive text explores the technologies and developments in excavations for any type of surface or underground excavation. The first several chapters cover unit operations, including drilling, explosives and blasting, mucking, haulage, hoisting, and supports and reinforcement. The book then describes excavation techniques for various operations, such as tunneling, raising, sinking, drifting, stoping, quarrying and surface mining, underground mining, pillar blasting, and liquidation. It also examines the design, planning, and analysis of excavations as well as the construction of surface and subsurface excavations, such as caverns. Case studies focus on heavy underground blasting during pillar recoveries.
