Book Description
This book presents the views of leading scientists on the knowledge of the global ocean circulation following the completion of the observational phase of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. WOCE's in situ physical and chemical measurements together with satellite altimetry have produced a data set which provides for development of ocean and coupled ocean-atmosphere circulation models used for understanding ocean and climate variability and projecting climate change. This book guides the reader through the analysis, interpretation, modelling and synthesis of this data.

Book Description
A full-spectral third-generation ocean wind-wave model, Wavelength-III, has been implemented in the South China Sea (SCS) for investigating wind-wave characteristics. This model was developed at the Ocean Modeling Branch of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The NASA QuickSCAT data (0.25 deg resolution) 2 times daily were used to simulate the wind waves for the entire year of 2000. The significant wave heights from Wavewatch-III are compared to the TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) significant wave height data over the satellite crossover points in SCS. The model errors of significant wave height have Gaussian-type distribution with a small mean value of 0.02 m (almost no bias). The model errors are comparable to the T/P altimeter accuracy (0.5 m) in the central SCS and are smaller than the T/P altimeter accuracy in the northern and southern SCS, which indicates the capability of Wavewatch-III for SCS wave simulation.

Book Description
Using five years of winter-season data, empirical equations are developed to provide 24-, 30-, and 48-hour forecasts of the average surface wind speed in the northern part of the South China Sea during the Northeast Monsoon season. The sea-level pressure over subtropical China and persistence are found to be suitable predictors. The equations are simple and convenient to use, exhibit some skill over persistence, and should be operationally useful. They should be especially helpful during the period subsequent to a surge in the Northeast Monsoon. (Author).

Book Description
A modified version of Professor W. Hansen's (l966) numerical hydrodynamical prediction model is used to predict typical tide and tidal current variations in the South China Sea for five different wind fields. Cotidal charts constructed from the sum of the major partial tides are presented for higher high and lower low water. The model, basic assumptions and boundary conditions are presented. No statistical evaluation of the model results can be made because of the lack of actual data. However, based on the excellent results obtained with this model for the North Sea and the good correlation with existing South China Sea data, it is believed that these results are superior in detail and accuracy to existing interpretations of the area.
