Book Description
The use of ultrafast lasers has expanded beyond use by specialist laser physicists and is increasingly commonplace in both physical and life sciences, where the high intensities, broad bandwidths, and short pulse durations make them ideal for investigating a wide range of chemical and physical phenomena. Working with these ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses requires some special care when compared to other laser systems, and this book provides an ideal starting point for the non-specialist to gain the necessary knowledge to start effectively working with ultrafast lasers and optics. The book walks the reader through the relevant parts of ultrashort pulse physics, pulse generation, and pulse characterisation, before discussing how to practically build an optical setup and manipulate these pulses. Many aspects of the practicalities of working with optics and lasers that are often considered assumed knowledge by experienced campaigners are discussed in detail. Aimed specifically at non-specialists, the emphasis is placed on intuitive, qualitative understanding of the concepts. The fundamental aim is that students starting a project or PhD in a laser group, can pick this book up and quickly get up to speed with the fundamentals of ultrafast laser physics that enable effective laboratory working.

Ultrashort Light Pulses
Author: S.L. Shapiro
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662225743
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Quantum Optics for Experimentalists
Author: Zhe-Yu Jeff Ou
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
ISBN: 9789813220201
Category : Quantum optics
Languages : en
Pages : 412
Book Description
This book on quantum optics is from the point of view of an experimentalist. It approaches the theory of quantum optics with the language of optical modes of classical wave theory, with which experimentalists are most familiar. This approach makes the transition easy from classical optics to quantum optics. The emphasis on the multimode description of an optical system is more realistic than in most quantum optics textbooks. After the theoretical part, the book goes directly to the two most basic experimental techniques in quantum optics and establishes the connection between the experiments and the theory. The applications include some key quantum optics experiments, and a few more current interests that deal with quantum correlation and entanglement, quantum noise in phase measurement and amplification, and quantum state measurement.

Laser Cleaning II
Author: D. M. Kane
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812706844
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 323
Book Description
Laser Cleaning II is the second of a series of books reporting research on the use of lasers for cleaning material surfaces and related micro-scale and nano-scale laser processing. It follows Laser Cleaning, edited by Boris LukOCOyanchuk, published in 2002. The primary focus is on contaminant particle removal, nano-scale sized particles in particular, which represents a major cleaning challenge in industrial contexts and poses a broad range of research questions. The contributions provide stimulating answers to these questions, spanning the essential areas: the fundamental theoretical and experimental physics of light/particle/interface interactions, invention and development of laser cleaning techniques and diagnostics, simulations for important material and process systems, and laser cleaning and processing applications. Laser cleaning for art and cultural heritage conservation is a related, mature field of research which is also treated."

Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814556939
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
Primary events in natural systems or devices occur on extremely short time scales, and yet determine in many cases the final performance or output. For this reason research in ultrafast science is of primary importance and impact in both fundamental research as well as its applications.
