Ubiquity
Author: Mark Buchanan
Publisher: Crown
ISBN: 9780609608104
Category : Causality (Physics)
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Why do catastrophes happen? What sets off earthquakes, for example? What about mass extinctions of species? The outbreak of major wars? Massive traffic jams that seem to appear out of nowhere? Why does the stock market periodically suffer dramatic crashes? Why do some forest fires become superheated infernos that rage totally out of control? Experts have never been able to explain the causes of any of these disasters. Now scientists have discovered that these seemingly unrelated cataclysms, both natural and human, almost certainly all happen for one fundamental reason. More than that, there is not and never will be any way to predict them. Critically acclaimed science journalist Mark Buchanan tells the fascinating story of the discovery that there is a natural structure of instability woven into the fabric of our world. From humble beginnings studying the physics of sandpiles, scientists have learned that an astonishing range of things–Earth’s crust, cars on a highway, the market for stocks, and the tightly woven networks of human society–have a natural tendency to organize themselves into what’s called the “critical state,” in which they are poised on what Buchanan describes as the “knife-edge of instability.” The more places scientists have looked for the critical state, the more places they’ve found it, and some believe that the pervasiveness of instability must now be seen as a fundamental feature of our world. Ubiquity is packed with stories of real-life catastrophes, such as the huge earthquake that in 1995 hit Kobe, Japan, killing 5,000 people; the forest fires that ravaged Yellowstone National Park in 1988; the stock market crash of 1987; the mass extinction that killed off the dinosaurs; and the outbreak of World War I. Combining literary flair with scientific rigor, Buchanan introduces the researchers who have pieced together the evidence of the critical state, explaining their ingenious work and unexpected insights in beautifully lucid prose. At the dawn of this new century, Buchanan reveals, we are witnessing the emergence of an extraordinarily powerful new field of science that will help us comprehend the bewildering and unruly rhythms that dominate our lives and may even lead to a true science of the dynamics of human culture and history.

Ubiquity
Author: Jacob W. Lewis
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9462702896
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 281
Book Description
From its invention to the internet age, photography has been considered universal, pervasive, and omnipresent. This anthology of essays posits how the question of when photography came to be everywhere shapes our understanding of all manner of photographic media. Whether looking at a portrait image on the polished silver surface of the daguerreotype, or a viral image on the reflective glass of the smartphone, the experience of looking at photographs and thinking with photography is inseparable from the idea of ubiquity—that is, the apparent ability to be everywhere at once. While photography’s distribution across cultures today is undeniable, the insidious logics and pervasive myths that have governed its spread demand our critical attention, now more than ever.

LBO 3 – Theory of Ubiquity
Author: David Butterworth
Publisher: Self Published
ISBN: 1312055170
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 38
Book Description
The third book of the series provides a benchmark of this theory against Newton's, Einstein's Schrödinger's, Dirac's, and Maxwell's laws, theories, and equations. Then it describes how awareness and order exists in the universe. It makes the case for Distributed Intelligence and consciousness. This book talks about life and how it exists in the universe. This analysis is based upon the Theory of Amorphism which is explained in the second book of this series. The theory basically states that everything in the universe is based upon singularity spaces or in a layman's term, black holes. What is the case for intelligence? It's in the singularity space. It's distributed across space and time just like matter. It’s more than just Entropy in Thermodynamics. Life comes from within, everything is alive. So come investigate this book and see a whole new view of the universe. Existence connects all things; a relatively simple concept but one that is not center of current scientific thinking. Everything is interconnected. Everything exists and has value, and you are a part of it. This is my attempt to bring this concept back to the center of the scientific community and in doing so to rethink all of our theories and concepts on how we view the universe, our world, and ourselves. And I will keep this book religion free because this series is about discovery, and I do not wish to step on anyone's dogma.

Conceptualizing the Ubiquity of Informal Economy Work
Author: Errol D’Souza
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811574286
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 102
Book Description
This book provides a framework to understand the disregarded aspect of emerging market growth which is informal employment. Informal employment in unregistered enterprises or of workers without employment contracts or social protection contributions constitutes 88 per cent of employment in India and is a ubiquitous feature of the economy. A large proportion of informal employment (86 per cent) is self-employment and this category of employment has been neglected in the literature on work and development which has focused instead on wage employment that is a contract for work with another person or enterprise. Another striking feature of such economies which the book engages with is that, as they have liberalized, informal employment in the registered enterprises or formal part of the economy has grown. The informal sector has been analyzed by recourse to two major approaches. One is a public economics framework that underlines how informal enterprises evolve as they trade-off reduced access to public services such as contract enforcement with the payment of taxes and regulatory compliances. This book extends this literature by focusing on the access to formal sector credit and its potential for financing productive enterprises as a factor that is considered when an enterprise contemplates whether to incorporate or not. The second leg of the literature takes a labour perspective and emphasizes mandated labour costs such as hiring and firing costs, benefits, and minimum wages as considerations when deciding on whether to engage labour on a formal or informal basis. The book broadens this literature by taking into account how the human capital of workers and the monitoring costs of ensuring that workers are adhering to the terms of negotiated contracts inform the decision with regard to informality. The book will resonate with those academics and policy makers who are engaged with the conundrums of development.
