More specifically, the study evaluates the resulting impact on “Generation Y”’s perception of traditional taxi services. Based on the findings of the research, the report suggests concrete managerial implications to the traditional taxi industry. The overall research was designed to derive insights based on both, qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative research was performed with two focus groups and created the foundation for the quantitative research, which was executed using an extensive online questionnaire with 94 participants. Both approaches targeted respondents classified as “Generation Y”. Core findings include the most significant attributes to evaluate traditional taxi services. Most importantly, the price, the friendliness of the driver and security were highlighted. Moreover, the overall satisfaction of customers is further determined by attributes such as availability, comfort and payment process. It must be considered however, that taxi services are rated significantly different among Uber users and non Uber users. As the former have ranked taxi services significantly worse than non Uber users, it can be concluded that the recent market entry of Uber influences and changes “Generation Y”’s perception of traditional taxis. The complementing finding that Uber services have been evaluated significantly more positive among the all respondents impressively emphasizes the thread for traditional taxis in the greater Lisbon area. The emerging competitor Uber is perceived as superior, even among the non Uber users. Both, the qualitative and quantitative analysis revealed that the traditional taxi industry currently faces major problems related to the lack of trust, transparency and security of the services, as well as the limited options of payment methods. For the time being, this leaves the services’ availability as the only competitive advantage of the traditional taxi industry. In order to secure its competitiveness in any market scenario, it can be concluded that the industry needs to adapt its core services with regards to multiple service features. With a focus on “Generation Y”, the taxi industry must introduce tools and mechanisms to enhance and control transparency, foster the acceptance of credit cards as a payment method and ultimately drop prices to a perceived fair and competitive level.

Bringing together sociological and legal perspectives with feminist theoretical insights, Julietta Hua and Kasturi Ray examine the case study of contemporary professional passenger driving in the United States. On the one hand, they show, the rise of the gig economy has brought new attention to the industry of professional passenger driving. On the other hand, the vulnerabilities that professional drivers experience remain hidden. Drawing on interviews with drivers, labor organizers, and members of licensing commissions, as well as case law and other published resources, Hua and Ray argue that working for ride-hail companies like Uber and Lyft shares similarities with driving for taxi companies in the impact on driver lives. Lyft and Uber sell the idea of industry disruption, but in fact they entrench long-standing modes of extracting the reproductive labor of their drivers for the benefit of consumer lives. Reproductive labor—conventionally understood as feminized labor—is extracted, but masked, behind the masculinized, racialized bodies of drivers. Professional driving is thus best understood alongside domestic and other gendered service work as reproductive labors devalued and often demonetized to benefit the national economy. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact that Uber has had on the taxi industry in the United States. The taxi industry's history is an ancient one that dates back to when horse-drawn carts were available for hire to transport people for short and long distances in Europe. The impact of technological innovation in the twenty-first century was chosen for study because of its huge and drastic effects metamorphing from computer-oriented to mobile and myriad portable devices and then advancing to smaller but very efficient devices with increased and effective functions. The study explored the effects of Uber's market entry and operations in the United States by analyzing previous dissertations, a couple theses, journal articles, and newspaper and magazine articles. The study utilized qualitative research methods to decode six themes from available data analyzing the public transportation industry since Uber's introduction in 2011. The search criteria relied on the ProQuest research database, university online repositories, journal publications, and newspaper and magazine publications. The review excluded dissertation studies based outside of the United States because the aim was to identify factors that directly relate to this country. The critical analysis involved assessing 17 dissertations that analyzed the impact of Uber and other ride-hailing service providers. A deductive approach was used to draw the six themes from 17 dissertations. Some studies were found to have more than one theme. Through this literature review came a discernment that there was room for further study. A qualitative study of existing research was undertaken, and secondary data was retrieved from publicly available sources, especially doctoral dissertations. After the initial literature and dissertation reviews, a grounded theory methodology was settled on as the most appropriate for this study. Then followed the iterative process for establishing the data set of quotations. This included the thought process for developing the descriptive labels, subcodes, and themes that were outlined. Finally, the six themes of disruptive innovation, sharing economy, business model, historical context, labor, and regulation were found to be consistent across the data set around which the core concept coalesced.
