Book Description
If wildlife diversity is to be maintained in managed forests, the habitat needs of all wildlife species must be met. This report provides some of the necessary information by describing the habitat requirements of 133 vertebrate species of north-central British Columbia in relation to two special habitat elements: wildlife trees and coarse woody debris. To make it easier for habitat managers to apply this information, requirements were condensed into a series of habitat summary tables. The tables, which are based mainly on published research reviewed up to 1995, describe in detail the varieties of wildlife trees and coarse woody debris that are required by wildlife.

British Columbia's Inland Rainforest
Author: Susan Stevenson
Publisher: UBC Press
ISBN: 0774818514
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
The vast temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia are world renowned, but much less is known about the other rainforest located 500 kilometres inland along the western slopes of the interior mountains. The unique integration of continentality and humidity in this region favours the development of lush rainforest communities that incorporate both coastal and boreal elements. In British Columbia's Inland Rainforest, scientists bring together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of information about this distinctive ecosystem. They also consider the ecological consequences of human activities in the rainforest and present strategies for its management and conservation.

Book Description
"In August 2004, the city of Brisbane, Australia, was host to one of the largest recent gatherings of the world's entomologists. Several thousand delegates attended the 22nd International Congress of Entomology, which featured a multitude of symposia that together covered a wide range of entomology-related topics. This special General Technical Report is based on papers presented in a symposium entitled 'Insect Biodiversity and Dead Wood.' It features contributions by scientists from around the world, and these contributions clearly illustrate our growing understanding of the entomological importance of dead wood.

Ecosystem and Tree Attributes Affecting the Presence of Functional Wildlife Tree Types
Author: Ben Heemskerk
Publisher: British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range Forest Scienc
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 44
Book Description
"Wildlife Trees play a significant role in maintaining species richness in forested ecosystems by providing critical habitat. This study was completed to develop a better understanding of the relationship between ecosystem and tree attributes and an established functional Wildlife Tree type classification. Data from four studies conducted in different ecosystems in central British Columbia are compared in this paper. The four study areas were: (1) boreal aspen forests, (2) mixed conifer forests in the boreal foothills, (3) mixed conifer forests in the moist interior plateau, and (4) mixed conifer forests in the interior wet belt. In each study area, tree species were evaluated by diameter classes for the percentage of live versus dead stems and functional Wildlife Tree types based on an existing classification system, and results within and among study areas were then compared. The combined tree sample size totalled almost 19 300 stems, comprising 10 different tree species. To provide a link to provincial Wildlife Tree policy, each tree's value was ranked using guidelines established by the provincial Wildlife Tree Committee."--Document.
