This study is unique in its exploration of the peculiar role of the archbishop-ethnarch and, as such, offers valuable historical and political insights into the phenomenon. This book offers a political history of religious authorities in the pre-modern, modern, and post-modern eras. It examines how nationalist politics evolved and was co-opted by religious authorities in order to re-establish political hegemony from a secular European colonial power, and the consequences this entailed after the end of the British empire.

Placed as a stepping stone on the sea route between Europe and the New East, Cyprus has always been a meeting place of many cultures. Though rarely united politically through many millennia of history - and for extended periods subject to foreign rule - the island nonetheless managed to maintain specific and unique identities. This publication seeks to throw new light on important aspects of the economy of Cyprus between c. 700 BC and AD 700 through a concerted study of the transport amphorae found in and around the island. These standardised containers of fired clay were commonly used for shipping foodstuffs from their places of production to the consumers in antiquity. Completely preserved or found only in fragments, such vessels are a prime source of information about the island's exports and imports of agricultural products, and ultimately about the fluctuations in the economy of Cyprus through a crucial millennium and a half of her history. The jars thus contribute both to our undertanding of the changing intensities of Cypriot connections with other centres around the Mediterranean and to the documentation of regional patterning within the island itself.

This is a study of the first century of the Latin Church on Cyprus, following the island’s loss to the Byzantine empire and its conquest by Richard the Lionheart in 1195. It covers both secular and regular clergy, and deals with the complex relations between church and crown, the nobility, and the urban Latin population within the island, as well as its relations with the papacy and the other Latin churches of the East. In December 2012 a group of scholars met in Münster to present their recent studies on the multifaceted history and culture of medieval Cyprus - and most of the papers presented at that conference are published in this volume. Several deal with the (political) history of the island: the reign of Isaakios Komnenos, the effects of the crusade of King Peter I in 1365, the so-called Ottoman-Venetian war. An overview of the three volumes of the Bullarium Cyprium is given. Aspects of economic life in medieval Cyprus are treated in three papers: organisation, management and economic activities of monastic estates in the Middle Byzantine period, medieval cane sugar production on the island, the commerce between the islands of Cyprus, Majorca and Sardinia. Papers on a major ecclesiastical complex dating from the early 7th century, on Cypriot artefacts of the 13th and 14th centuries used in daily life, on luxury metal objects from the Lusignan period, and on some rather disparate elements of 15th-century architecture in Cyprus give insights into the material culture of medieval Cyprus. As Cyprus experienced British imperial rule between 1878 and 1960, Greek and Turkish nationalism on the island developed at different times and at different speeds. Relations between Turkish Cypriots and the British on the one hand, and Greek Cypriots and the British on the other, were often asymmetrical with the Muslim community undergoing an enormous change in terms of national/ethnic identity and class characteristics. Turkish Cypriot nationalism developed belatedly as a militant nationalist and anti-Enosis movement. This book explores the relationship between the emergence of Turkish national identity and British colonial rule in the 1920s and 1930s.
