Aspects of Byron’s Don Juan is, in part, a proceedings volume from the 2012 conference held by the Newstead Byron Society at Nottingham Trent University. Speakers represented in the book include Malcolm Kelsall, Peter Cochran, Diego Saglia and Itsuyo Higashinaka. Topics range from the politics of Don Juan, and its treatment of women, to its comic rhymes. One section is devoted to the poem’s importance in the literatures of Spain and Russia, another to the vast catalogue of Byron’s prose sources (from cannibalism to cookery books), and a final section to the important role played by Mary Shelley in copying most of the poem for the printer. The editor’s introduction describes the enormous literary tradition of which Don Juan forms a vital continuation, from Pulci’s Morgante Maggiore, via Rabelais, Cervantes, and Montaigne, to the novelists Sterne, Smollett and Fielding, all of whom Byron adored. Though traditionally defined as a relatively brief time period - typically the half century of 1780-1830 - the "Romantic era" constitutes a crucial, indeed unique, transitional phase in what has come to be called "modernity," for it was during these fifty years that myriad disciplinary, aesthetic, economic, and political changes long in the making accelerated dramatically. Due in part to the increased velocity of change, though, most of modernity’s essential master-tropes - such as secularization, instrumental reason, individual rights, economic self-interest, emancipation, system, institution, nation, empire, utopia, and "life" - were also subjected to incisive critical and methodological reflection and revaluation. The chapters in this collection argue that Romanticism’s marked ambivalence and resistance to decisive conceptualization arises precisely from the fact that Romantic authors simultaneously extended the project of European modernity while offering Romantic concepts as means for a sustained critical reflection on that very process. Focusing especially on the topics of form (both literary and organic), secularization (and its political correlates, utopia and apocalypse), and the question of how one narrates the arrival of modernity, this collection collectively emphasizes the importance of understanding modernity through the lens of Romanticism, rather than simply understanding Romanticism as part of modernity. Desperate Storytelling demonstrates how writers from Byron to Saul Bellow have embraced Cervantes's vision of the artist as creative exile, born to tell tales of valor and nobility yet doomed to recognize the world's banal reality. Forced to portray adventure in a reductive voice, these writers have immersed heroism in madness and narrative in mockery. Their fictions reflect an awareness of life's absurdities, yet a refusal to forsake the ideal. Reassessing the post-Romantic literary consciousness, Roger B. Salomon explores the many permutations of the mock-heroic mode, the complex aesthetic instrument brought into being by Cervantes, one by which a writer takes on a dual role as both nostalgic creator and ironic critic. The mock hero is almost by definition an outdated one, aligning his deepest emotional attachments to dead mythologies and forgotten codes of ethics; he is an alienated figure in a landscape hostile to the possibility of any kind of attainment.
