Book Description
Excerpt from Twelfth Report of the State Entomologist of Minnesota to the Governor for the Years 1907 and 1908 This insect is at least two-brooded in Minnesota, young nymphs appearing upon apple trees soon after the leaves open, and the last brood of adults ovipositing in. The tissues of the bark of apple (and other?) trees. The eggs of the summer broods are laid in the petiole of clover, apple, and doubtless many other plants, which furnish them food during the summer months. There are five nymphal stages, and the length. Of time elapsing between hatching of egg and appearance of adult averages about twenty-two days. The adult may live fourteen days or over. Experiments of 1907 indicate that thirty days or more may be passe-d in adult stage. The presence of the winter egg is denoted by a blister-like swell ing on bark of apple, about 75 mm. Long by 4 mm. Broad. The contained egg is about as long as the blister, hyaline and semi-opaque. See Fig. 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Thirteenth Report of the State Entomologist of Minnesota to the Governor: For the Years 1909 and 1910 Dear sir: I herewith present the Thirteenth Report of the State Entomologist of Minnesota, covering work of this office and insect conditions during 1909 and 1910. For the sake of economy this report is now printed biennially. In addition we print from time to time and mail to farmers and fruit growers circulars of information and press bulletins, planning to have these reach them at the time when most needed, and thus be more helpful than if we delayed publishing until the issuing of the printed report. This plan appears to work satisfactorily. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Fifteenth Report of the State Entomologist of Minnesota to the Governor: For the Year 1913 and 1914 Dear Sir: - Complying with the law, I take pleasure in submitting herewith the Fifteenth Report of the work of the State Entomologist, from December 1, 1912, to December 1, 1914, covering insect conditions in this state during that period. The financial statement, however, necessarily covers the fiscal years, August 1, 1912, to August 1, 1914. The season of 1913 was a normal year as far as insect pests were concerned. There was no marked injury from grasshoppers and but few complaints reached us of this pest. This was probably due to a vigorous growth of grain and weeds as well as to favorable weather conditions. Given, however, a few dry seasons in succession, and we will doubtless suffer from these insects as we did in 1910 and 1911. In fact, this pest may have been abundant in 1913, but on account of vigorous crop growth and abundant weeds, their work was not noticed. Fortunately, this Department has found a practical, effective and cheap way of combating grasshoppers in this altitude. Conditions in 1914 were practically the same as those in 1913 and no outbreak of grasshoppers was reported. The same comments apply to the Chinch Bug, only two reports having reached us in 1913. As in the case of the preceding insect, we will at times, when conditions favor, be afflicted to a greater or less extent with this enemy of grain and it will doubtless continue to be of periodical occurrence. An interesting observation was made by the Entomologist in June, 1914, in connection with the Chinch Bug; namely, the finding of these insects in a grain field in Clearwater County, far north of what has been regarded as their normal range in Minnesota. Book Description
Excerpt from Sixteenth Report of the State Entomologist of Minnesota: To the Governor for the Years 1915 and 1916 The owner of Nursery B below Stillwater, in which the disease has probably been present for more than one year, claims that he has bought only seed from European sources, and that his pines for the past ten years-have been of his own raising. The row of eighteen-year old trees, upon which the blister rust was first found in that locality, was planted there when the nursery was first established fourteen or sixteen years ago, and so far, those in a position to know where the trees came from have claimed inability to state the source. The owner of Nursery A at Taylors Falls, as has already been stated, unwittingly brought some diseased trees from Wisconsin to his nursery in the spring of 1915. So far inspections of all other nurseries in this state have failed to disclose the rust. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the State Entomologist of Minnesota to the Governor: For the Year, 1904 Dear Sir: The fact that we have had little injury this year from the Hessian fly and the chinch bug need not fill our farmers with a feeling of security as regards these pests, and occasional grasshopper visitations, for with the crop conditions in Minnesota, we will undoubtedly always have the first two pests, and at times be troubled with grasshoppers. The Hessian fly has been heard from in a few counties, but there has been but little injury this year, and little or no injury from the chinch bug. I have occasionally received reports which would indicate the presence of the frit fly on wheat, though no specimens have ever been sent, and I have personally not met with the pest here. We have been surprised by the introduction of the European willow and alder borer attacking our Carolina poplars, introduced in this country many years ago, and gradually working its way westward. This beetle is treated of on page 115. Your Entomologist has deemed it advisable to insert in this report a key to insects affecting the blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, currant, gooseberry, grape and melon, for the use of market gardeners - this key being a continuation of the one published last year on insects affecting fruit trees. It is to be hoped it will be useful. In this connection I wish to call attention to the fact that reports of the State Entomologist are planned to form a series of references for farmers, fruit growers, market gardeners and others, and to be of special use should be preserved so that they can be referred to from time to time when conditions call for reference. Book Description
Excerpt from Nineteenth Report, State Entomologist of Minnesota to the Governor Dear Sir: In compliance with the law I have the honor to present herewith a report on the activities of the entomologist for the years ending December 1, 1921 and December 1, 1922. A typewritten report was given you December 1, 1921, for the year preceding, but as this (1922) is the year for the report to be printed I am making the report to cover the two-year period. The law mentioned states that the entomologist shall make a report to the governor. As the legislature of 1921 divided my work, placing the regulatory part under the State Commissioner of Agriculture and the experimental and extension part under the University Department of Agriculture, I have made two reports, that covering the regulatory phase of the work being incorporated in the biennial report of the Commissioner of Agriculture; and the attached report, to be printed as the nineteenth report of the entomologist, to the governor. These reports have been the outlet for publishing some very valuable data on Minnesota insects, and it is believed that the value of the series is increasing. Many favorable comments have been received from workers in entomology throughout the country as well as from those within the state. The legislature of 1894 and every legislature since, appropriated money for the work of the entomologist directly. Up to the fiscal year 1921-22 this money has been spent directly by the entomologist. As the law of 1921 places the responsibility of the work in the two channels mentioned, the funds are now distributed through the State Department of Agriculture and the University Department of Agriculture, respectively. A discussion of the principal insect problems of the biennium and the financial statement follows: Insect problems of the biennium The first year of the biennium 1920-21 was very unusual. The winter was very mild and consequently more insects than usual were able to pass comfortably through the dormant period. This mild winter was followed by a very early spring and a long warm summer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
