Book Description
The growing economic competition among the world's industrialized and developing nations has spurred comparisons and examinations of national school systems. An important aspect of any school system is school and classroom management, which is an indicator of the ultimate goals that a nation has for its future workers. In this volume, international scholars examine the daily life of elementary school classrooms in six nations with complex economies, an international presence, and salient minority and immigrant populations. These original essays analyze contemporary classroom management practices and policies, as well as their historical and theoretical frameworks.

Book Description
Many commentators feared that the Education Reform Act of 1988 sounded the death knell for teacher professionalism in Britain. More than a decade later, however, professionalism appears to have staged a miraculous recovery: David Blunkett says that 'it is back at the very heart of teaching'. But what kind of professionalism is this? In whose interest is its recovery. and what effects will it have? And how does this development relate to changes in edict countries and other professions? The Politics of Professionalism provides authoritative answers to these questions. It does so by setting the debates in their historical context and by drawing on detailed research findings on teachers' experience of work arid education, especially the curriculum, in the current era. In the process, this book makes a major contribution to our understanding of the politics, history and sociology of teaching and the other professions.

Book Description
Evaluation, whether in schools and colleges, LEAs or TECs is now universally recognised as an essential part of any effective educational and training system. There are, however, two major problems in its implementation: lack of time and a perceived lack among middle and senior managers of the special skills necessary for an evaluation to have external validity. This book provides a solution to both problems. It offers evaluation processes which accept time limitations and work within them an it strips away the mystique of evaluation to describe methods and procedures which will enable educational and training staff at all levels to organise and carry out useful evaluations. Administrators, teachers and trainers as well as the staff of local and national inspectorates will welcome its cogent and realistic guidance.

Book Description
First published in 1997, this volume contributes to the debate on the ground-breaking Technical and Vocational Education Initiative (TVEI) introduced by Margaret Thatcher by exploring the implications of its equal opportunities policy. The scheme was announced in 1982, piloted in 1983, extended nationally in 1987 and ended in 1997. It responded to criticisms that the education system was failing to meet the needs of employers and committed to equal opportunities for boys and girls along with increasing access to technology at the genesis of the computing era. The TVEI represented the first major intervention by central Government in curriculum development in England and was organised on a local authority level. The author, Sue Heath, had experienced mixed messages for what students of each gender could expect to achieve and she remained fascinated by the implications of the TVEI for 1980s school curriculums. Based on research begun in 1989, the volume reassesses the significance of the TEVI as a landmark policy in education. Heath examines areas including vocationalism, the issue of gender, implementing the TVEI locally, the curricular experiences of TVEI pupils and whether the TVEI succeeded in preparing students for the world of work and later life.

What constitutes quality schooling? What are the implications for educational practice and administration? The text looks at these questions and examines international research evidence and reform initiatives with particular emphasis on North America, UK, Australasia and the Third World. It offers a synopsis of the Third World School Effects Research (SER). The authors claim that the challenges now facing educational leaders is to find a balance between SER and the other school movements and to ask more demanding questions of our educational systems.

Creating a Hopeful Future * Harnessing our creative energies * Re-framing our values * Changing our focus The Global Community needs a pivotal idea to give it purpose, direction and meaning. What would you choose as your guiding principle for the world? Transforming the world is everybody's business - we all inhabit a little bit of it, and we have a vested interest in keeping it going, and in improving it. Choosing an idea which we can all get behind, regardless of nationality, race, sex, class, religious belief, or political affiliation can help us work towards a more hopeful future in which we can all share. Life's Lessons examines the three organizational principles of education, business and government which involve all of us in one way or another, and seeks to shed light on how we might refocus our values and create a more inclusive society. Together, we can design education systems which care more about people than performance, businesses which care more about people than profit and governments which care more about people than politics. You are invited to explore the history and evolution of our collective society through the writings of some of our most creative thinkers, and to discover our shared human values. The lessons have all been taught - we just need to put them into effect. Find your voice, and join together to create a future worth living for our children and our children's children.
