Book Description
An experimental program was conducted to investigate effects of roughness, and roughness superimposed on single and/or multiple, shallow, periodic waveforms, on turbulent boundary-layer skin friction and velocity profile, in compressible, adiabatic flow. Test conditions were Mach number = 2.9 and Reynolds number/ft = 2 million to 8 million. The planar models included smooth, sand-grain, machined and molded surface finishes. Direct measurements of surface shear and Pitot/recovery temperature profiles were obtained. (Modified author abstract).

Book Description
The boundary layers produced on rough surfaces in adverse pressure gradients were investigated. The report contains experimental results obtained for a single surface roughness at three pressure conditions: one at constant pressure and two having adverse pressure gradients. The mean velocity profiles in the boundary layer were measured by both Pitot tubes and hot wires. The longitudinal turbulence intensities were measured with a hot wire. The pertinent boundary layer parameters were calculated and are presented. Results were compared with available smooth wall data. (Author).

Book Description
The primary objective of this research program was to investigate the effects of surface roughness on turbulent boundary layer heat transfer by obtaining accurate, comprehensive, quality heat transfer data for zero pressure gradient incompressible air flow over constant temperature test surfaces with well-defined surface roughness geometries. Knowledge gained from the experimental investigation was used to improve and extend the roughness energy transport model used in the discrete element prediction method, thus enhancing and expanding the capability to predict the effects of surface roughness on turbulent flow and heat transfer. Fluid dynamics and heat transfer data for turbulent boundary layer flow over a smooth and five rough surfaces were taken in the Turbulent Heat Transfer Test Facility (THTTF) for x-Reynolds numbers ranging up to 10,000,000. The smooth wall data was used for qualification of the THTTF and provided base line data for comparison with the data from rough surfaces.

Book Description
Thick, fully rough, and transitionally rough turbulent boundary layers were studied in order to investigate the differences between fully rough and transitionally rough behavior and to observe how downstream development affects these flows as the boundary layers become very thick. Measurements included Stanton numbers, skin friction coefficients, mean temperature and velocity profiles, Reynolds stress tensor component profiles, and spectra of the longitudinal velocity fluctuations. Predictions of wall heat transfer, wall shear, and mean profiles were made using a mixing-length and turbulent Prandtl number closure scheme which accounted for the effects of wall roughness in the boundary layer equations. The turbulent layers were artificially thickened using an array of solid obstacles which produced a two-dimensional equilibrium flow field with properties representative of natural bounday layers, at least up to the level of the turbulent correlations on a smooth wall, and to the level of the spectra of longitudinal velocity fluctuations on a rough wall. A rough-wall boundary layer environment was provided in which all measurements of lower order than the turbulence correlations could be discussed regarding the influence of roughness, and considered to have properties representative of natural behavior. Book Description
Experimental data on a rough surface for both transitionally rough and fully rough turbulent flow regimes are presented for Stanton number distribution, skin friction coefficient distribution, and turbulence intensity profiles. The rough surface is composed of 1.27-mm-dia hemispheres spaced in a staggered array four base diameters apart on an otherwise smooth wall. Special emphasis is placed on the characteristics of heat transfer in the transitionally rough flows. Stanton number data are reported for zero pressure gradient incompressible turbulent boundary layer air flow for nominal free-stream velocities of 6, 12, 28, 43, 58, and 67 m/s, which give x-Reynolds numbers up to 10,000,000. These data are compared with previously published rough surface data, and the classification of a boundary layer flow into transitionally rough and fully rough regimes is explored. Moreover, a new heat transfer model for use in the previously published discrete element prediction approach is presented. Computations using the discrete element model are presented and compared with data obtained from two different rough surfaces. The discrete element predictions for both surfaces are found to be in substantial agreement with the data.
