Author: Weijing Lu
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 080478678X
Category : History

Pages : 367
Book Description
This path-breaking book examines the broad cultural, social, and gender meanings of the "faithful maiden" cult in late imperial China (1368–1911). Across the empire, an increasing number of young women or "faithful maidens," defied their parents' wishes and chose either to live out their lives as widows upon the death of a fiancé or killed themselves to join their fiancé in death. The book analyzes the familial conflicts, government policies, ideological controversies, and personal emotions surrounding the cult. Concentrating on the dramatic acts of spirit wedding and suicide, the faithful maidens' unique code of conduct, and the extraordinary life journey of "virgin mothers," Lu documents the ideological, psychological, cultural, and economic aspects of these young women's mentality and behavior, and the implications of this behavior for their families and the broader society. The book's narrative of the faithful maiden cult interweaves late imperial political, cultural, social and intellectual history, thus, providing a new window onto the history of the late imperial period.

True to His Word
Author: Jon Bloom
Publisher: Moody Publishers
ISBN: 0802475604
Category : Religion

Pages : 319
Book Description
What if you’re struggling to believe that God is truly faithful? The Bible teaches that God is always faithful, that He’s always TRUE to HIS WORD. Saints throughout history have affirmed it, and hymns and worship songs celebrate it. But what if it doesn’t look that way to you? You’re not alone. The Bible is full of examples of God’s children struggling to trust him in seasons of disappointment, discouragement, danger, disaster, depression, and deep grief—only to see God’s faithfulness to them manifest in surprising ways. These meditations are designed to help you grow in your ability to recognize God’s faithfulness in places you may not typically look, at times you don’t expect, and in providences—especially the most disturbing and devastating ones—that often don’t look like God’s faithfulness. Because the more you see it, the more wonderful God’s faithfulness becomes to you. And the more you’ll realize that “all the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness” (Psalm 25:10). Because God is faithful, we can fight the good fight . . . one day at a time, by trusting that He will always be true to His Word.

The Earthkeepers mastered the Insights, and used them to heal disease, eliminate emotional suffering, and even grow new bodies that age and heal differently. Mastery of the Insights allows you to reinform your DNA and participate consciously in your biological, emotional, and spiritual evolution. According to the prophecies of the Maya, Hopi, and Inka Earthkeepers, we’re at a turning point in human history, when a new species of human will give birth to itself. We’re going to take a quantum leap into what we’re becoming and will no longer be Homo sapiens but Homo luminouos. The Four Insights reveal ancient technologies we can practice for becoming beings of light with the ability to perceive the energy and vibration that make up the physical universe at a much higher level.

It's Your Word Against Mine
Author: Sylvester Carrington
Publisher: Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency
ISBN: 1949483614
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
It’s Your Word Against Mine is a collection of stories by Sylvester Carrington that compares unique cultural words and phrases from his native Barbados with select American terms. Some of these words have a different meaning in his culture, while others are nonexistent when it comes to translation. These simple words migrated with him and he has added those he encountered when he came to live in America. The author’s engaging style of storytelling will grab readers, as he takes them on a cultural journey using a vehicle of simple words to highlight the different aspects of the two cultures he has called home. With amazing skill, he has intricately woven each cultural term and phrase into a narrative that is altogether fascinating, entertaining, educational, and at times, personal and autobiographical. Watch for the highlighted words in italics throughout the book that compare and contrast these two vastly different cultures.
