Book Description
Faced with growing competition, trucking companies must develop and use technology to help them operate in real-time mode and make decisions to improve their financial position. Performance support systems offer just such tools. This technology is the focus of this study. The objectives of the study are: 1. to define the needs within the trucking industry for performance support technology; 2 to review computer-based products available or under development in North America and Europe that assist in routng, scheduling, dispatching, fleet management, and decision support; 3. to explore concepts and technologies used in other industries that might be transferable to trucking; and 4. to analyse the tasks involed in trucking management, and how these might benefit from technology. The report identifies a need within the trucking industry to use training and technology to improve its performance, specifcally its costumer service, strategic planning and logistics, leadership skills, and general management. The study found 65 applications developed for the trucking industry in the areas of fleet management, dispensing, routing and others. Many others are under development. The study also found technological tools used in their industries that would likely be transferable to trucking. However, the report stipulates that the needs of the trucking industry must be more specifically defined before determining which technologies would benefit the industry most. The study could not draw any conclusions as to task analyses due to poor response from industry. The report demonstrates that there are many oppertunities within the trucking to use technology to improve its competitiveness. The industry is prepared to do this providing that the technology is cos-effective, easily updated and easy to use. Although some technology is avalable to meet industry needs, more appropriate applications must eventually be developed. This will require considerable effort and funding. Before such technology is developed, however the exact needs of industry must be defined, as well the precie tasks that could most benefit from technological tools.
