Hundreds of triosmium carbonyl complexes containing bidentate phosphine ligands have been reported, but very few have involved more than one type of diphosphine ligand. Using microwave heating, we have investigated the reactivity of Os3(CO)12 with the two diphosphines bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe). Four new osmium carbonyl complexes have been isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis: Os3(CO)8(u00b5-dppe)(u03ba2-dppe) (1), Os3(CO)8(u00b5-dppe)(u03ba2-dppm) (2), [Os3(CO)9(u00b5-dppm)]2(u00b5-dppe) (3), and [Os3(CO)9(u00b5-dppe)]2(u00b5-dppe) (4). Complexes 1 and 2 are the first known examples of triosmium clusters containing diphosphine ligands that exhibit both bridging and chelating bonding modes in the same molecule. Complexes 2 and 3 are the first examples of triosmium clusters containing both dppm and dppe ligands in the same molecule. In complexes 3 and 4, two triangular Os3 units containing a diphosphine ligand are held together by a third bridging diphosphine ligand. We will present details of the syntheses of these new compounds and compare their structural features.

With the goal of developing systematic syntheses of linked triosmium carbonyl clusters, we report the substitution reactions of the dibridged cluster Os3(CO)10(μ2-OEt)2 with the bifunctional ligand 1,5-pentanediol. Reaction of Os3(CO)10(μ2-OEt)2 with 1,5-pentanediol affords the cluster Os3(CO)10(μ2O(CH2)5OH)2 as the major product. Over extended reaction periods, quantitative conversion to the cluster H4Os4(CO)12 is observed. Linking of two triosmium carbonyl clusters via the 1,5-pentanediol bridging ligands has been achieved in the reaction of Os3(CO)10(μ2-O(CH2)5OH)2 with one molar equivalent of Os3(CO)10(μ2-OEt)2. A secondary product of this reaction has been characterized spectroscopically and is believed to be an intermediate in the formation of H4Os4(CO)12. A synthetic route to Os3(CO)10(μ2-OEt)2 via di-halogenated cluster intermediate Os3(CO)12X2 or Os3(CO)10(μ2-X)2 (X = Cl, Br, I) is also reported.
