Book Description
“Anyway, I feel like the longer we sit here the worse our odds get. Let’s just do it and see what happens.” No one would ever be able to have a summer like this again, although they didn’t know that at the time. It’s the middle of the 1980s, and the internet, cell phones, cable TV, all of it was about to change the world, but it hadn’t just yet. They’re saying goodbye to more than just their childhood and taking one last run through the neighborhood in this story about growing up, told by a kid who was there at just the right age. If you’re old enough to remember you might find some familiar territory. If you’re too young to have been there, this is the stuff your parents don’t want to tell you about. Up until now, summers has been pretty carefree for Pete and his friends. This one was not. He has an uncool nickname, his best friend Ricky lives next door with a stepmom who has serious anger issues, and they both have a problem with a former friend and current neighborhood juvenile delinquent, James Barlow. When James starts focusing his aggression on them, it sets off a chain of events that winds through baseball games, the longest and possibly strangest Fourth of July ever, an epic game of Kick the Can, trespassing everywhere, and generally causing minor chaos across the neighborhood. At the same time, Pete is learning that the adult world that he and his friends (and enemies) are moving towards isn't as simple as what he knows. Soon they’re going to be starting high school, and that’s not the only thing that’s going to be changing for them, and everyone else. But before it does, they have a one last chance to fully enjoy the way things were until they have to leave it all behind forever. The first of three parts.

Book Description
If we are unable to limit, in a humane and intelligent way, the world’s human populations we will not escape our history of growth and collapse. And the next collapse will be like no other. It will not be restricted to the remote Easter Island. It will not give us the chance to expand to another area as with the collapse of the Samarian civilization. The next collapse will be a worldwide one, epic in proportion, and perhaps the final one for the human race. However, if some of us do make it through this global downfall what will our descendants find in the geological record. Surely they will discover that the Anthropocene was a time of human dominance of the world, a time where humans held all the cards, a time when we could have stopped the cycle of growth and collapse, but a time that proved the human species was not intelligent enough to do so. Perhaps, in the future our descendants will look back at the Anthropocene and rename it from: “the age of man” to: “the age of very, very, stupid men”.

Book Description
“If Alfred Hitchcock could remake Fargo, it might feel something like Carkeet’s comic-absurd latest” (Publishers Weekly). Denny Braintree, a wisecracking loner devoted to model trains, has found himself stranded in Vermont. His night at the hotel begins promisingly—until his prospective one-night stand walks out on him. As he prepares to leave town, someone mistakes Denny for Homer Dumpling—a local man who mysteriously disappeared three years earlier, and who apparently looks a whole lot like Denny. Instead of correcting the mistake, Denny slips into his new identity as easily as a winter fleece. And it’s a good thing too, because the woman he’d hoped to sleep with has turned up dead, and the chief suspect is the out-of-towner who was pursuing her at the hotel . . . As Denny tries to unravel the mystery, he struggles to hide his true identity from Homer’s increasingly suspicious circle of family and friends, including Homer’s prickly girlfriend. The adventures of this fast-talking bumbler as his survival instincts are put to the test make for a rollicking novel by an author who has produced “some of the funniest writing since Mark Twain” (Jonathan Kellerman, New York Times–bestselling author of Night Moves). “A deftly funny book.” —Carl Hiaasen

Book Description
In 2015, Cara Achterberg’s Pennsylvania farm became a haven for Operation Paws for Homes, which rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural south and shuttles them north to foster homes. Nine puppies arrived with less than a day’s notice; a heart-worm positive dog; a deeply traumatized stray pup from Iraq; and countless others who just needed a gentle touch and a warm place to sleep. The stories of these remarkable dogs—including an eighty-pound bloodhound who sang arias for the neighbors—and the joy they bring to Cara and her family (along with a few chewed sofa cushions) fill the pages of this touching and inspiring book. When asked how she can possibly say goodbye to that many lovable pups, Cara says, “If I don’t give this one away, I can’t possibly save another.” Filled with humanity and hope, Another Good Dog will take the reader on a journey of smiles, laughs, and tears—and lead us to wonder how many other good dogs are out there and what we can do to help.

Book Description
The human condition is fraught with ambiguity and plagued by uncertainty. We can’t always know ourselves and what we might do in any given circumstance, even though we might like to think otherwise. Therefore, we highly value the concept of truth as it is reassuring to feel that there is some kind of certainty in our world. If only we can find, define, and hold onto this elusive truth then we can soothe our psyches with the balm of truth, and thereby delude ourselves with feelings of certainty. It is not easy to think that truth may be an outdated concept, or indeed a concept with very little utility, except perhaps in the realm of fairy tales and fantasy. In our lives we can only see shadows on the wall of the human cave. We need to keep in mind these shadows are only built from our personal experiences, our culture, and our perception. Defining truth is like trying to hit a moving target. If some idea becomes a so-called truth at some point, can it be an eternal truth? Are some truths immutable, or is this possibility mere wishful thinking? Is there a moment in time when circumstances allow a truth to be possible or to really be true? Then if that moment in time passes does the particular truth lose its relevance or use? Often traditional truths are the most powerful in our cultures, and are continually passed down through the generations. These types of truth gain immense hold over our lives and appear to gain extra power over us merely from their ancient lineage, regardless of their sense or nonsense. Is it possible to have different versions of truth? Is a truth necessarily subjective and relative to situation? How much does truth matter to us, and in what ways does it control our decisions, even our lives. Does the concept of truth promote the accumulation of knowledge or hinder it? This is a smart and insightful book that asks many such questions. It examines “truth” and questions assumptions about the idea of truth. It puts “truth” under close scrutiny and comes up with a useful tool for examining one’s own, and society’s assumed truths. Dr. Julia Buss, 2016.

Book Description
Proud geek Neevie Harrington has to deal with an ever-shrinking budget, sleep deprivation, and now the bane of her existence is bleating about lab break-ins. She doesn’t need this man insisting they discover the identity of who is after their precious data. Then again, she doesn’t need additional long hours spent at work either. She does need more sleep and less coffee. Patient, gorgeous Jackson Collins, like Neevie, is just trying to find a cure for superbugs. No biggie. But he’s distracted by whoever keeps sneaking into his lab. He is not distracted by his prickly, adorable colleague, who somehow manages to make her nerdy glasses look cute. Playing footsies might be tempting with snarky Neevie but he’s got a cure to find and a lab breaker to catch. Whether it’s wise to join forces or not is still in question.
