Book Description
The second International Conference on Trends in Quantum Electron ics (TQE'85) was held in Bucharest at the National Centre for Physics in September 1985, and brought together more than 350 scientists from 22 countries. In accordance with the objectives established at the first conference, which was held in 1982 in conjunction with the third International Summer School in Coherent Optics, the second conference con centrated upon the central topics and chief directions of development in quantum electronics - which stands out as an area of science and technology that is currently expanding vigorously. On the other hand, it was also apparent that TQE'85 was primarily influenced by the worldwide celebration, in 1985, of the 25th anniversary of the laser - a moment of prime importance in the development of many frontline fields, including communications, chemistry, biology, health care and materials processing. A special session was devoted to this anniversary. In keeping with the dynamic spirit of the conference, the fine quality of the invited lectures and the other contributions set a high scientific standard for the proceedings. Mention should be made of the posters that were presented throughout the conference. These, together with the exhibition of books and journals and a display of specialized scientific equipment, did much to create a framework for effective communication and stimulating interaction, to the benefit of all the participants. Of invaluable help in the preparation of the conference was the collaboration of the International Scientific Advisory Committee.

Book Description
This book investigates the electronic properties of QDs of non-linear optical, III-V, II-IV, n-GaP, n-Ge, Te, Graphite, PtSb2, zero gap, II-V, GaSb, stressed materials, Bi, IV-IV, Lead germanium telluride, Zinc and Cadmium diphosphides, Bi2Te3, Antimony, III-V,II-VI,IV-VI compounds, III-V,II-VI,IV-VI, HgTe/CdTe and strained layer Quantum Dot Superlattices (QDSL) with graded interfaces and the QD effective mass superlattices of the aforementioned materials together with their heavily doped counter parts on the basis of newly formulated electron dispersion laws. The book considers the structures in which a layer of QD is inserted in the QW (Dots-in-Well) in the base and examines theoretically if there is improvement in the performance over the usual QW structure.

Book Description
Quantum mechanics, the subfield of physics that describes the behavior of very small (quantum) particles, provides the basis for a new paradigm of computing. First proposed in the 1980s as a way to improve computational modeling of quantum systems, the field of quantum computing has recently garnered significant attention due to progress in building small-scale devices. However, significant technical advances will be required before a large-scale, practical quantum computer can be achieved. Quantum Computing: Progress and Prospects provides an introduction to the field, including the unique characteristics and constraints of the technology, and assesses the feasibility and implications of creating a functional quantum computer capable of addressing real-world problems. This report considers hardware and software requirements, quantum algorithms, drivers of advances in quantum computing and quantum devices, benchmarks associated with relevant use cases, the time and resources required, and how to assess the probability of success.

Book Description
Recent advancements in quantum-enabled systems present a variety of new opportunities and challenges. These technologies are important developments for a variety of computing, communications, and sensing applications. However, many materials and components relevant to quantum-enabled systems exist outside of the United States, and it is important to promote the development of assured domestic sources of materials, manufacturing capabilities, and expertise. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a 2-day workshop to explore implications and concerns related to the application of quantum-enabled systems in the United States. This workshop focused on quantum-enabled computing systems, quantum communications and networks, and quantum sensing opportunities. Participants explored the path to quantum computing, communications, and networks, opportunities for collaboration, as well as key gaps, supply chain concerns, and security issues. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Description
The ultimate non-technical guide to the fast-developing world of quantum computing Computer technology has improved exponentially over the last 50 years. But the headroom for bigger and better electronic solutions is running out. Our best hope is to engage the power of quantum physics. 'Quantum algorithms' had already been written long before hardware was built. These would enable, for example, a quantum computer to exponentially speed up an information search, or to crack the mathematical trick behind internet security. However, making a quantum computer is incredibly difficult. Despite hundreds of laboratories around the world working on them, we are only just seeing them come close to 'supremacy' where they can outperform a traditional computer. In this approachable introduction, Brian Clegg explains algorithms and their quantum counterparts, explores the physical building blocks and quantum weirdness necessary to make a quantum computer, and uncovers the capabilities of the current generation of machines.

Book Description
Quantum size effects are becoming increasingly important in microelectronics, as the dimensions of the structures shrink laterally towards 100 nm and vertically towards 10 nm. Advanced device concepts will exploit these effects for integrated circuits with novel or improved properties. Keeping in mind the trend towards systems on chip, this book deals with silicon-based quantum devices and focuses on room-temperature operation. The basic physical principles, materials, technological aspects, and fundamental device operation are discussed in an interdisciplinary manner. It is shown that silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterostructure devices will play a key role in realizing silicon-based quantum electronics.
