Heliothis: Research Methods and Prospects
Author: Myron P. Zalucki
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461230160
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 251
Book Description
Heliothis ("Bull worm") species are one of the major pests of field crops worldwide, including sorghum, tomatoes, lettuce, and cotton. Pest problems have intensified over the years as the total area given to agricultural host plants has increased. This comprehensive text, written by experienced researchers, assembles biological and ecological research techniques and approaches to Heliothis management: from the fundamental question of defining genetic species to collecting, rearing, and sampling techniques for the construction of life tables; the measurement of predator impact and physiological development; the detection and measurement of behavior, migration, and diapause; population genetics and resistance. Approaches to modelling population dynamics are also explored. This book is intended for beginning research students as well as experienced workers. It will be a valuable reference for entomologists, population ecologists, and agronomists concerned with crop protection.

Polarized Light and Polarization Vision in Animal Sciences
Author: Gábor Horváth
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642547184
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 652
Book Description
This book covers advances made since the 2004 Springer volume “Polarized Light in Animal Vision” edited by Horvath and Varju, but also provides reviews and synopses of some areas. Part I examines polarization sensitivity across many animal taxa including vertebrates and invertebrates and details both terrestrial and aquatic life. Part II is devoted to the description of polarized light in nature and explores how the physics of light must be taken into account when understanding how polarized light is detected by the visual system. This includes underwater polarization due to scattering; polarization patterns reflected from freshwater bodies; polarization characteristics of forest canopies; normal and anomalous polarization patterns of the skies; skylight polarization transmitted through Snell’s window and both linearly and circularly polarized signals produced by terrestrial and aquatic animals. This Part also examines polarized “light pollution” induced by anthropogenic factors such as reflection off asphalt surfaces, glass panes, car bodies, and other man-made structures that are now known to form ecological traps for polarotactic insects. Part III surveys some of the practical applications of polarization vision including polarization-based traps for biting insects, ground-based polarimetric cloud detectors and an historical examination of the navigational abilities of Viking seafarers using the sky polarization compass. The deterrent qualities of ungulate pelage to polarization-sensitive biting insects is also examined in this section.

Book Description
Book 4 of Colin Limmerick's Adventures. It's almost 1911. Colin Limmerick, the handsome sea captain, has a problem. He's stuck with a twenty-eight-thousand-year-old Neanderthal on board his ship. He realizes he must venture into another time-travel quest to bring the ancient beast back to its own time period. Rosa, the pretty archaeology Ph.D. student, instills to eccentric Russian-scientist, Dr. Sasha Dimitrikov that they need another means of fuelling the time machine. The inventor of time travel has the idea of converging magnetic lines at magnetic true north in the Arctic to fuel the time machine and deliver the Neanderthal back to its time period. Limmerick, Dimitrikov, Rosa, and the sexy chancellor of the university venture Arctic waters, where they are confronted by an unexpected blast from their future. A Soviet sub from 1970 slips through the time vortex! Just what Colin, Rosa, and Dr. Dimitrikov needed on this mission.
