On a vu d'autre part que les franges de superposition permettent de prendre exactement la moitie, le tiers, etc., d'une longueur donnee, a l'aide de l'interferometre; nous avons place les lames de l'interf erometre au quart de la distance de celles de l'etalon; dans ces conditions on obtient des franges vertes d'ordre 61.400 environ dont la premiere est connue a 4 ou 5 unites pres et qui sont d'ordre assez peu eleve pour que les concordances des anneaux verts et rouges ne soient pas seules observables, mais que les discordances des anneaux verts et bleus le soient aussi; cette observation a suffi pour fixer sans aucune incertitude l'ordre au centre et en le multipliant par 4 on aurait pu avoir immediatement l'ordre de l'etalon lui-meme; on aurait trouve ainsi: 245.533,0. Par prudence et pour eviter une erreur toujours a redouter nous avons pris encore successivement le cinquieme, et la moitie, les observations ont parfaitement concorde avec celles faites au quart, et l'observation directe faite...
