Book Description
This volume explores the impact and import of the provocative and challenging work in this generation's most notable French feminists. Despite the growing influence of the French feminists in the humanities (especially in literary criticism, poststructuralism, and psychoanalysis), American religionists have only recently begun to utilize their approaches and theories. The volume introduces the characteristic concerns and themes of the leading French feminists (particularly Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray, and Julia Kristeva), assesses their work against the very different orientations and impulses of North American feminism, and gauges the potential of their ideas for both hermeneutical explorations and for feminist theologies. In the process contributors shed important light on such issues as the normativity of women's experience, the character of subjectivity, and structural dimensions of oppression. For those who would join this critical conversation, Transfigurations will be the indispensable entree. Contributors include: Ellen T. Armour Rebecca S. Chopp Elizabeth Grosz Amy Hollywood Serene Jones Cleo McNelly Kearns Francoise Meltzer Sharon D. Welch

Book Description
This book explores the meanings of Queer and Trans People of Colour (QTPOC) activist groups in the UK, considering the tensions around inclusion and belonging across lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) and of colour communities and wider British society. Davis draws de-/anti-/post-colonial, Black feminist, and queer theory into critical psychology to publish the first book of its kind in the UK, developing an intersectional understanding of QTPOC subjectivities and identities. The book examines questions of belonging; racial melancholia; decolonising gender and sexualities; and the joys, erotics, and the difficulties of building and finding QTPOC community that can hold and celebrate our intersectional richness. Offering a radical and critical intervention into psychology, this volume will be of key interest to scholars in Gender Studies and Queer Studies, Psychology and Race, together with activists, community organisers, counsellors, and the third sector.

Book Description
This book introduces central assumptions that govern postmodern and feminist theory, offering educators a language to create new ways of conceiving pedagogy and its relationship to social, cultural, and intellectual life. It challenges some of the major categories and practices that have dominated educational theory and practice in the United States and in other countries since the beginning of the twentieth century. Rejecting the apolitical nature of some postmodern discourses and the separatism characteristic of some versions of cultural feminism, the contributors take a political stand rooted in concern with cultural and social justice. In so doing, these essays represent a linguistic shift regarding how we think about ethics, foundationalism, difference, and culture. The selections present a concern with developing a language that is critical of master narratives, racism, sexism, and those technologies of power in schools that subjugate, infantilize, and oppress students. The authors also develop a language of possibility that focuses on analyzing how power can be linked productively to knowledge, how teachers can construct classroom social relations based on notions of equity and justice, how critical pedagogy can contribute to an identity politics that is grounded in democratic relations, and how teachers can develop analyses that enable students to become self-reflective actors as they transform themselves and the conditions of their social existence.
