Travel and tourism have a long association with the notion of transformation, both in terms of self and social collectives. What is surprising, however, is that this association has, on the whole, remained relatively underexplored and unchallenged, with little in the way of a corpus of academic literature surrounding these themes. Instead, much of the literature to date has focused upon describing and categorising tourism and travel experiences from a supply-side perspective, with travellers themselves defined in terms of their motivations and interests. While the tourism field can lay claim to several significant milestone contributions, there have been few recent attempts at a rigorous re-theorization of the issues arising from the travel/transformation nexus. The opportunity to explore the socio-cultural dimensions of transformation through travel has thus far been missed. This volume contains extended versions of papers presented at the Third International Workshop on Logic Program Synthesis and Transformation (LOPSTR 93) held in Louvain-la-Neuve in July 1993. Much of the success of the workshop is due to Yves Deville who served as Organizer and Chair. Many people believe that machine support for the development and evolution of software will play a critical role in future software engineering environments. Machine support requires the formalization of the artifacts and processes that arise during the software lifecycle. Logic languages are unique in providing a uniform declarative notation for precisely describing application domains, software requirements, and for prescribing behavior via logic programs. Program synthesis and transfonnation techniques formalize the process of developing correct and efficient programs from requirement specifications. The natural intersection of these two fields of research has been the focus of the LOPSTR workshops. The papers in this volume address many aspects of software develop ment including: deductive synthesis, inductive synthesis, transforma tions for optimizing programs and exploiting parallelism, program analysis techniques (particularly via abstract interpretation), meta programming languages and tool support, and various extensions to Prolog-like languages, admitting non-Horn clauses, functions, and constraints. Despite the progress represented in this volume, the transition from laboratory to practice is fraught with difficulties.

The mathematical theory and practice of cryptography and coding underpins the provision of effective security and reliability for data communication, processing, and storage. Theoretical and implementational advances in the fields of cryptography and coding are therefore a key factor in facilitating the growth of data communications and data networks of various types. Thus, this Eight International Conference in an established and successful IMA series on the theme of “Cryptography and Coding” was both timely and relevant. The theme of this conference was the future of coding and cryptography, which was touched upon in presentations by a number of invited speakers and researchers. The papers that appear in this book include recent research and development in error control coding and cryptography. These start with mathematical bounds, statistical decoding schemes for error correcting codes, and undetected error probabilities and continue with the theoretical aspects of error correction coding such as graph and trellis decoding, multifunctional and multiple access communication systems, low density parity check codes, and iterative decoding. These are followed by some papers on key recovery attack, authentication, stream cipher design, and analysis of ECIES algorithms, and lattice attacks on IP based protocols.
