Book Description
The problem of traction is most important from the individual farmer's point of view. For ordinary work under normal conditions a pneumatic wheel tractor can do satisfactory work as far as handling pulled equipment is concerned. However, there are times, e.g. when ploughing during the drier season of the year, when every tractor owner finds the rear wheels slip exceedlingly and has to reduce the load or wait until soil moisture conditions improve sufficiently to regain efficient traction. In certain areas farmers have been forced to buy crawler tractors at considerably greater cost than ordinary wheel tractors in order to accomplish all the jobs they wanted to get done.

Book Description
Agriculture has benefited considerably from the wide-scale use of tractors and associated implements. Tractors have developed along two, at times contradictory, design paths. The first of these has resulted in functional improvements to the vehicle, making it capable of im proved performance in the often harsh environmental conditions in which it is required to operate. For example, agricultural tires have improved the versatility of tractors by allowing them to operate at relatively high speeds on a variety of terrains, and hydraulics have provided for flexibility in controlling and operating implements. It can also be seen that these particular functional design improvements have contributed significantly to the second design pathway, that of ergon omics, and the human-machine interface. Recent stress on the working environment for the tractor operator has led to design improvements relative to tractor cabs, the placement and labeling of controls, etc. This text discusses those factors relevant to the design, selection, and operation of tractor-implement systems. The audience for which it is intended is undergraduate and graduate students of agricultural engineering studying power and machinery. However, the text is suf ficiently applied to have relevance for those extension personnel in volved with advising farmers on the selection and operation of tractor implement combinations. The tractor cannot be regarded in isolation from the implement, nor from the environment in which both the tractor and implement are ix x Preface working.

Book Description
Excerpt from Traction Farming and Traction Engineering, Gasoline Alcohol Kerosene: A Practical Hand-Book for the Owners and Operators of Gas and Oil Engines on the Farm; Comprising a Full Description of the Leading Makes of Farm Tractors With Directions for Their Care and Operation The gasoline motor, adapted as it is to the use of fuel in the form of gasoline, kerosene and alcohol, furnishes a source of power for both traction and stationary pur poses that is at once economical, clean and safe, and is able to develop power from a fuel, the supply of which is practically inexhaustible. The use of the gasoline mo tor has become so general that we find it in use every where, and practically for all purposes where power is needed. One of the most hopeful signs, and one which presages future prosperity, is the rapidly increasing use of gaso line traction engines on the farm. Mechanical power applied to the heavy work on the farm enables larger areas to be handled, and as a consequence the production is increased accordingly. Because the farmer is aided by mechanical power to make the earth yield more abun dautly, the city dweller is able to obtain the necessaries of life at a less cost than would be the case if all labor was done by hand.
