This book explores contemporary migration by boat through the intertwined, and under-explored, elements of empirical data, governance and geopolitics, and discourses. While the migration of people by boat is a long-standing phenomenon, journeys have become more frequent and precarious as states illegalise entry. As migration at sea becomes more common, it has gained attention from a range of actors, including enforcement authorities, political elites, media, and non/inter-governmental organizations. The sea has thus become a space of hope/desperation for migrants as well as conflict over territory and sovereignty, representing wider social debates in and beyond Australia, Canada, the European Union, and the United States. Current literature on migration by boat reflects these debates, primarily concentrating on the humanitarian and legal realities of migration by boat and border enforcement at sea , however, few studies have analysed their empirical relationship. This edited volume aims to fill this gap and thereby address three important, overlapping aspects of these debates. The first theme will explore data and methods on migration by boat, its discourse, and its enforcement, and in addition identifying appropriate research methodologies and sources to gather these data. The second theme will build upon the first by focusing on the relationship between data on migration by boat and governance and geopolitics of the “border”. Building upon the two themes already outlined,the third theme will identify and analyse how elite discourses represent migration at sea.

Il confine orientale può essere considerato come uno spazio in cui per secoli si sono intrecciate e sovrapposte molteplici frontiere, di natura politica, culturale, religiosa e infine nazionale. Un luogo non solo fisico, in quanto parte dell’Adriatico e in sostanza limine fra la penisola italiana e quella balcanica, ma anche cesura tra l’Europa occidentale e quella orientale in senso generico. Proprio in quanto superficie di rottura, il confine orientale rimane certamente un nodo caratteristico nella storia d’Italia. Collocato geograficamente dalle sponde del fiume Isonzo alla displuviale alpina orientale, racchiude il Carso (triestino e goriziano) e la penisola istriana sino a Fiume e al litorale dalmata con i suoi arcipelaghi di isole fino a Cattaro. In esatta sintonia con i numerosi contrasti confinari avvenuti in Europa fra la seconda metà del XIX secolo e la prima del XX, la storia del confine orientale italiano perdura come tentativo emblematico di fissare all’interno di una regione multiforme ed eterogenea per vicende e popoli una frontiera egemonica. Limite mutevole perché sempre fissato su termini ideologici e proprio per questo di perpetua ardua demarcazione. Nel più generale panorama storiografico sulla questione, il volume intende porsi quale strumento accessibile anche a un pubblico non specialistico interessato alle tematiche istriano-dalmate. Dalla pace di Campoformio ai fermenti irredentisti di fine Ottocento, dalle rivendicazioni seguite alla Grande guerra sino alla politica fascista e all’esodo giuliano, il saggio approfondisce lo scenario diplomatico internazionale con le sue implicazioni - prima e dopo - la Seconda guerra mondiale per seguire (grazie a una ricca messe di riferimenti bibliografici italiani e stranieri) l’evolversi delle contese per la definizione confinaria. Using in-depth field research and analysis of case studies, Mafia Violence: Political, Symbolic, and Economic Forms of Violence in Camorra Clans focuses attention on the phenomenon of violence performed by Italian organised crime groups, devoting specific attention to the Camorra, which has been responsible since the mid-1980s for almost half of all mafia homicides documented in Italy. The Camorra has acquired increased visibility at an international level due to its intense use of violence and high level of dangerousness, but until now, the study of the different forms of violence implemented by mafias has not received systematic attention at the scientific level. Hence, this book fills this gap by providing a both theoretical and empirical contribution toward the analysis of one of the most unknown – although highly visible and dangerous – dimension of mafias’ action. This collection of work by distinguished scholars provides a unique overview of the multifaceted characteristics of violence currently performed by mafia groups in Italy by focusing on specific actors – i.e., Camorra clans – but also other traditional mafia organisations such as Cosa Nostra and ’Ndrangheta; specific contexts – i.e., different territories and different markets, both legal and illegal; and specific practices and performances. Tracking technologies are now ubiquitous and are part of many people’s everyday lives. Large sections of the population voluntarily use devices and apps to track fitness, medical conditions, sleep, vital signs or their own or others’ whereabouts. Governments, health services, immigration and criminal justice agencies increasingly rely upon tracking technologies to monitor individuals’ whereabouts, behaviour, medical conditions and interventions. Despite the human rights concerns of some organisations and individuals, most wearers and their significant others tend to welcome the technologies. This paradox is only one of the many fascinating challenges raised by the widespread use of tracking technologies which are explored in this book. This book critically explores the ethical, legal, social, and technical issues arising from the current and future use of tracking technologies. It provides a unique and wide-ranging discussion, via a cross-disciplinary collection of essays, on issues relating to technological devices and apps whose use is imposed upon wearers or suggested by others, whether agencies or individuals, including in the domains of criminal justice, terrorism, and health and social care.
