Book Description
This paper reviews a variety of research studies of worker exposure in forestry & agriculture, as well as some observations of homeowners & lawn care workers, in order to consider the exposure of forest workers to herbicides. It first summarizes general approaches to the assessment of worker exposure to herbicides, then discusses research on such matters as absorption of herbicides through skin contact, protective measures, urinary excretion of herbicide after exposure, variations in exposure when using different types of applicator equipment, contact with treated vegetation as a source of herbicide exposure, and exposure following burning of treated vegetation. The final section makes suggestions toward developing exposure standards for forest workers.

Book Description
Triclopyr (3,5,6-trichloro 2-pyridinyloxyacetic acid) is a herbicide active on broadleaf & woody plants. It is available as the butoxyethyl ester and the triethylamine salt. This paper reviews research reported in the literature concerning the toxicology of triclopyr and evaluates the risks to forest workers associated with exposure to triclopyr formulations. It first summarizes what is known about the behaviour of triclopyr in the body (adsorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and the acute & subacute toxicity of triclopyr. It then examines the herbicide's subchronic & chronic toxicity, reproductive effects, mutagenic effects, and carcinogenicity. The final section assesses the overall health risks to forest workers associated with the use of triclopyr ester. Includes glossary.

Book Description
Hexazinone is a broad-spectrum soil-active herbicide available for forestry uses. This paper reviews research reported in the literature concerning the toxicology of hexazinone and evaluates the risks to forest workers associated with exposure to hexazinone formulations. It first summarizes what is known about the behaviour of hexazinone in the body (adsorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and the acute & subacute toxicity of hexazinone. It then examines the herbicide's subchronic & chronic systemic toxicity, reproductive & developmental toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenic potential; and studies of forest worker exposure to hexazinone. The final section assesses the overall health risks to forest workers associated with the use of hexazinone. Includes glossary.

Book Description
This paper reviews the basic principles of health effects evaluation and risk estimation for chemicals, with reference to herbicides commonly used in Canadian forestry. It first presents some general concepts related to toxicology, environmental chemistry, and epidemiology, then explains the nature of interactions between chemicals and the body. The dose-response relationship for systemic effects (effects other than cancer) and for chemically induced cancer is also reviewed. The final section sets out general considerations related to risk assessment and specific considerations related to systemic, threshold-based effects and irreversible effects, whether or not threshold-dependent. Includes glossary.

Book Description
Understanding Risk to Wildlife from Exposures to Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) provides the most recent summary of toxicity data relevant to mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, and provides values for use in risk assessment applications. Predicting the bioaccumulation of PFAS in terrestrial wildlife (including humans) has proven to be extremely complex. As a group, PFAS act differently than traditional non-ionic organic molecules, where PFAS can break down and reform, whereas some are demonstrated to be extremely persistent. Where sufficient data are provided, this book establishes toxicity reference values (TRVs), which are derived to assist in characterizing environmental sources of contamination and making risk-based decisions. Features: Provides toxicity reference values (TRVs) for vertebrates (mammals, birds, amphibians) for PFAS, where sufficient data are available, and includes objective supporting background information. Assigns a level of confidence to each TRV to provide the risk assessor with an understanding of the relative uncertainty associated with each value. Presents toxicity data in the formats of scatter diagrams and tables for quick review and assessment. Provides TRVs relevant for screening and decision making This book serves as a useful aid for risk assessors and managers in those industries that have sites contaminated with PFAS, consultants tasked with evaluating risks at such sites, and staff at regulatory agencies at various governmental levels, who need to know how much contamination is considered safe for wildlife. It will also appeal to researchers with an interest in filling the gaps in the current toxicological data for PFAS exposure.
