In all genealogical work the first and most important step is to establish the geographical origin of the ancestor. In Irish research the genealogist may know the name of the county where the ancestor lived but be puzzled about a place name given as the place of birth or residence. To appreciate the value of the concept of the townland the best course for us is to examine in detail every aspect of one or more of them in terms of our own existence. In local history studies we concentrate on the community that has lived in the townland. This publication will introduce the reader to the documentary sources that survive in archivies and explain how they can be related to the traditions, the artefacts and the oral evidence.
