Book Description
Hadronic radiotherapy uses particle beams to treat tumors located near critical body structures and tumors that respond poorly to conventional photon and electron beam radiotherapy. Initial research in hadronic radiotherapy was performed using accelerators built for physics research. The good results of the proton and ion therapy programs have enhanced the tendency to use protontherapy as a routine method. There are about 20 working protontherapy facilities (first, second and third generation) and more than 30 centers are planned. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of the field with a discussion on the fundamental basis of particle physics and radiobiology, as well as review of clinical and technical specifications and designs for proton radiotherapy. In particular, the current designs of proton and heavy ion accelerators, beam delivery systems, gantries, beam monitoring and dosimetry systems, control and safety systems, patient positioning and immobilization devices, and ancillary treatment facilities are widely discussed. Contents: Physical and Radiobiological Properties of Hadrons; Status of Clinical Research in Protontherapy; Hadrontherapy Facilities World-Wide; Requirements for Hadrontherapy Centers; Protontherapy Accelerators; Beam Transport and Delivery Systems; Proton Gantries; Radiation Detectors; Treatment Ancillary Facilities; Control System of the Protontherapy Center; Shielding for Proton Facility; Global Costs and Financial Analysis of the Activities of the Proton Center; Proposal of a Dedicated Protontherapy Facility. Readership: Engineers, medical physicists and physicians involved in the design and construction of radiotherapy accelerators, undergraduate and graduate students in high energy accelerator and biomedical physics, radiotherapists.

Book Description
The pace of discovery, within the EU, of scientific aspects of cancer research and of developments in the clinical field is so rapid that it is sometimes difficult to keep abreast. This brief overview attempts to highlight some of the advances in the field, as part of BIOMED programme funded research and specific results due to the co-operative spirit established by the scientific community. It is particularly worth noting the financial investment of 35 million ECU in the current programme, has d as a catalyst in attracting a large number of Member States funded research in pooling their collective knowledge base.

This text describes the activities of current cancer research projects as well as the strengths and weaknesses within the specific domains of basic research, clinical research and screening, chemoprevention and epidemiological research. These reflections therefore bring together the experiences from different scientific and biomedical research teams and from most of the national cancer research organizations of the European Union who are also involved in the BIOMED programme.

Book Description
Human aging is perhaps the most complex and important subject that will be facing science and societies in the next century. Persons seem to be living longer and remaining more active than their parents and grandparents. This is leading to social and demographic shifts that must be accommodated by society. On the other hand it presents perplexing questions about the underlying processes and determinants of healthy aging. This book gives a design for research that will increase our understanding of the factors that influence healthy aging and can lead to improvements in reducing the levels of disability in the population. It's focus is on biobehavioural and psychological factors contributing to healthy aging. Since human aging is determined by many interacting conditions inside and outside of the organism, research should concentrate on ecological relationships between the human organism and its social and physical environment. Not only individual characteristics associated with aging are discussed in this book, but also their impacts on society. Living longer means most persons will have fewer years to earn money to maintain their lives in a longer retirement. How can these two forces be resolved through public policy? At the same time greater competence in the later years needs clues to ways of releasing this productivity for the benefit of society and individuals. Adding healthy life expectancy and creating as much as possible disability-free years is a goal that can only be reached through fact finding by a multidisciplinary team of scientist collaborating on an international basis. Such a team is present in the collaborators represented in this book. The information presented in 'Aging in Europe' has not been available in any single source before. In many ways this book provides a model of gaining knowledge through cooperation that should guide us in the next century and beyond.

Book Description
EUCAMBIS was established under BIOMED I in 1994 as an interdisciplinary consortium aiming to advance our understanding of the molecular and cellular bases of ageing of immunosenescence. The project sought to draw together scientists and clinicians from diverse fields including immunology, molecular biology, cell and tumour biology, geriatrics, endocrinology and transplantation biology in order to investigate the impact of ageing on immune responses. The papers collected in this volume illustrate the diversity of the work carried out by the members of EUCAMBIS during its three-and-a-half year existence. This introductory chapter attempts to summarize the results of some of the EUCAMBIS collaborations, with emphasis on the "workshop" approach which was aimed at analysing the expression of "growth arrest" genes in ageing human T lymphocytes.

Book Description
Used extensively in North America and Europe, seminal practice networks, also referred to as practice research networks, recruit office-based physicians to monitor defined events among their patients, such as influenza, mumps and asthma attacks, at regional, county and even national levels. After adequate analysis, these data indicate spatial and temporal trends in event frequencies: comparibility of national results is, however, limited, partly due to the different national health systems influencing the demand of medical care. More importantly, the lack of comparable data on the population from which the cases arise - denominator data - obstructs the comparison of data from primary care research between different regions or countries.

Book Description
With its roots in the last century and currently exploiting the technology of today, the science of drug metabolism has made significant contributions to our understanding of chemico-biological interactions. This book reviews past successes and failures within the science and attempts to predict new directions. Each of the chapters of this book deals with an aspect of xenobiotic metabolism which has featured prominently in the development of the discipline. The volume is testimony to the breadth and depth of research into xenobiotic metabolism and covers the chemistry and enzymology of xenobiotic metabolism, enzyme modeling and structure activity relationships, pharmacokinetics, the use of recombinant gene technology, site directed mutagenesis, transgenic and gene knockout models, new analytical techniques including capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry, accelerator mass spectrometry, high throughput analysis toxicological assessment, pharmacogenetics, drug development and therapeutics. With new chemical entities constantly emerging and requiring evaluation, the concepts and techniques developed in this book will help focus future lines of investigation and help set priorities in the next millennium.

Book Description
The objective of the EURO-QUAL programme has been to improve the quality of care for the individual patient. At the same time the need for harmonisation of health care in Europe was recognised. This Quality Improvement System (QIS) for orthodontic care in Europe comprises of 'Guidelines for how to implement a QIS' and reference material from the project teams: Financial Resources, Professional Development, Consumer Satisfaction, and Industrial Co-operation. In this respect the following topics are discussed: * The differences and similarities in local (national) quality initiatives. * The use of databases, as a technique to improve quality by comparing one's own performance against that of colleagues. * The influence of the different national systems of funding on both the amount of care provided as well as the quality of care. * The contents and the quality of the educational programmes, at all levels of orthodontic care. * Promotion of patients' rights and responsibilities before, during and after the orthodontic treatment. * A common goal and common language with the industrial partners by which the interaction can be optimised and communication will be enriched. This book provides the background information for the appropriate use of the European Orthodontic Quality Manual (EOQM). Strategies for the implementation of a QIS in orthodontics, taking into account the complex of the outlined aspects, make this book interesting for the orthodontic professional as well as the stakeholders (education, funding, industry, and consumers) in orthodontic care.
