Book Description
The ignition process of a drop of liquid fuel in the gas phase has been the subject of a significant number of theoretical as well as experimental studies. In view of the complexity of these problems, the various authors have used different approximations to simplify the problem, and in practically all of the studies the ignition process was analyzed in an approximation where the processes of heat and mass transfer in the gas medium were inertialess and in an independent diffusion approximation. In the present study the ignition of a drop near critical conditions is studied with the inertia of the gas medium considered. The correctness of replacing the equations of multicomponent diffusion by the independent diffusion equations which are generally used is also analyzed.

Analysis of Thermal Ignition Lag in Fuel Droplet Combustion
Author: C. K. Law
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Combustion engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
A theory of the thermal ignition of a fuel droplet in a hot oxidizing atmosphere is formulated using an existing gas-phase ignition criterion and an analysis for the transient droplet heating process. Limits in the ignitability of a system, either spontaneous or delayed, are identified. A kinetically-controlled ignition regime and a droplet-heating-controlled ignition regime are shown to exist in cold and hot environments respectively, each exhibiting distinctively different ignition characteristics. The ambient pressure is found to have small influence on the ignition lag except for the marginally ignitable cases.

Combustion of Two-Phase Reactive Media
Author: L. P. Yarin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540403395
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 584
Book Description
Combustion of Two-Phase Reactive Media addresses the complex phenomena involved in the burning of solid and liquid fuels. In fact, the multiplicity of phenomena characteristic of combustion of two-phase media determine the contents. The three parts deal with: the dynamics of a single particle; combustion wave propagation in two-phase reactive media; and thermal regimes of combustion reactors. The book generalizes the results of numerous investigations into the ignition and combustion of solid particles, droplets and bubbles, combustion wave propagation in heterogeneous reactive media, the stability of combustion of two-phase media, as well as the thermal regimes of high-temperature combustion reactors. It merges findings from the authors’ investigations into problems of two-phase flows and material from graduate-level courses they teach at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
