Book Description
Touts is a historical account of the troubled formation of a colonial labor market in the Gulf of Guinea and a major contribution to the historiography of indentured labor, which has relatively few reference points in Africa. The setting is West Africa’s largest island, Fernando Po or Bioko in today’s Equatorial Guinea, 100 kilometers off the coast of Nigeria. The Spanish ruled this often-ignored island from the mid-nineteenth century until 1968. A booming plantation economy led to the arrival of several hundred thousand West African, principally Nigerian, contract workers on steamships and canoes. In Touts, Enrique Martino traces the confusing transition from slavery to other labor regimes, paying particular attention to the labor brokers and their financial, logistical, and clandestine techniques for bringing workers to the island. Martino combines multi-sited archival research with the concept of touts as "lumpen-brokers" to offer a detailed study of how commercial labor relations could develop, shift and collapse through the recruiters’ own techniques, such as large wage advances and elaborate deceptions. The result is a pathbreaking reconnection of labor mobility, contract law, informal credit structures and exchange practices in African history.

An Inquiry Into Vigilance and Corruption
Author: Barun Kumar Sahu (IAS)
Publisher: Prabhat Prakashan
ISBN: 9353228565
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 537
Book Description
This book is a treatise on vigilance; compliance and anti-corruption. It is based on empirical and realistic approach to the subject; with some interpretations from ancient wisdoms. The book will be of interest to bureaucrats and senior managers in government; public and private sectors; and to political practitioners and policy-makers. Vigilance is founded on the premise that honesty is the best policy. But; at times; it appears counter intuitive and not borne out from the real-life experiences. If vigilance were so easy to comprehend and unconditionally acceptable; then perhaps there would have been no need to teach vigilance; or write any book on it. It would have been instinctive. All of us would have just followed the dogma. There are four types of corruption: 1. Tribute 2. Coercive corruption 3. Collusive corruption 4. Mass indoctrination Vigilance authorities concentrate on curbing tributes and coercive corruptions; but collusive corruptions and mass indoctrinations are far more lethal and damaging. The book emphasizes on these two later forms of corruption. AN INQUIRY INTO VIGILANCE AND CORRUPTION by BARUN KUMAR SAHU (IAS): Authored by Barun Kumar Sahu, an Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer, this book delves into the critical issues of vigilance and corruption. It explores the complexities and challenges related to these issues, drawing upon the author's extensive experience and expertise in the field of governance. The book offers insights into strategies to combat corruption and promote vigilance in public administration. Key Aspects of the Book "AN INQUIRY INTO VIGILANCE AND CORRUPTION by BARUN KUMAR SAHU (IAS)": Expert Perspective: The book is authored by Barun Kumar Sahu, an IAS officer, and draws upon his deep knowledge and experience in matters related to vigilance and corruption. Exploring Key Issues: It delves into the complexities of vigilance and corruption, providing readers with a deeper understanding of these critical challenges in public administration. Matatu
Author: Kenda Mutongi
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022647142X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 361
Book Description
This prize-winning study “takes a unique ethnographic approach to reconstructing the history of Nairobi’s privately owned urban transport” (Martin A. Klein Prize Committee, American Historical Association). Drive the streets of Nairobi, and you are sure to see many matatus—colorful minibuses that transport huge numbers of people around the city. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. They can be stately black or extravagantly colored, sporting names, slogans, and airbrushed portraits of everyone from Kanye West to Barack Obama. In this richly interdisciplinary book, Kenda Mutongi explores the history of the matatu from the 1960s to the present. As Mutongi shows, matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of late-twentieth-century Africa. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs, they reflect divergent aspects of Kenyan life—from rapid urbanization and the transition to democracy to organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, and popular culture. Offering a shining model of interdisciplinary analysis, Mutongi mixes historical, ethnographic, literary, linguistic, and economic approaches to tell the story of the matatu and explore the entrepreneurial aesthetics of the postcolonial world.
