Excerpt from Topographical Surveying and Sketching This text book was, for the most part, originally prepared in the form of lectures and pamphlets for the instruction of student officers of the U. S. Army Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and it has had the test of several years of use, criticism and correction by a most intelligent body of instructors and students. In "Surveying" no departure from the regular and recognized methods has been attempted. Indeed, at this time, it would be difficult to add anything new or original to the many excellent text books on this subject. Attention is invited, however, to the treatment herein presented of the adjustments of instruments, particularly with reference to the level tube; to the marking of the stadia rod which automatically applies the correction for the constant of the instrument; to the methods of applying latitudes and departures in reducing and plotting a survey and in computing areas; and to the methods of resection with the plane table. In the subject of "Sketching," by which is meant the application of rapid and approximate methods of surveying with hand instruments, the methods adopted and developed in the Department of Engineering of the U. S. Army Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth are described and explained. By these methods an individual road sketch covers twenty miles of road in a day, and shows topography by 20-foot contours and all essential details to a distance of 400 or 500 yards on each side of the trail. By combining the sketches made on a number of parallel and cross roads a fair topographical map covering an area at least 20 miles square (400 square miles) may be made in one day by a group of sketchers. Excerpt from Surveying: With Sections on Map Reading, Military Sketching and Topographic Drawing There are two fundamentals that the Committee wishes to impress upon instructors: 1. An efficient instructor must be accurately informed as to what jobs a carpenter, or a blacksmith, for instance, may be called upon to do in the Army. 2. Methods of instruction must be used which in the time available will best train men to do these jobs. To assist instructors in these two important respects, new course outlines are being prepared by the Committee on Education and Special Training. As soon as completed they will be issued to the co-operating schools. These outlines are sufficiently definite to produce that degree of specialization required by the various Army Corps; yet they are also sufficiently flexible to allow for the broader development of resourcefulness and initiative which are essential to the men in the army. Results to be obtained have been set down rather than detailed methods of accomplishing results. Such details can be developed best in each institution through the ingenuity of the instructors in charge. A promotion program is preferable to a rotating one. It is not desirable to follow rigidly a plan which provides that all students get a definite length of time on each of a number of specified subjects in rotation, though such a program is well suited to the most able men. The work should be organized so that while the most able men will get the entire course of instruction, others will omit those subjects for which they have no special aptitude, giving full time and attention to those things in which they show promise of success. In general this means a course arranged not for the average but for the best student and then administered so that only those men who show or develop ability on one job will be promoted to the next more difficult task. To illustrate: In the auto-mechanic squad only those men who have thoroughly mastered the details of the axle and wheel work will progress to engine work, and then again only those who show a good understanding of engine construction will take up further study of gas engine performance. Again only those who show special all-around ability in these things will proceed further with the study of ignition, timing and the more complicated details of operation. Excerpt from The Plane-Table and Its Use in Topographical Surveying: From the Papers of the United States, Coast Survey Topography is that branch of surveying by which any portion of the land surface of the earth is mapped in plan on a specified scale or proportion of nature. With the plane-table such a map is constructed on the ground by at once drawing upon the paper, which is Spread upon the table, the angles subtended by different objects, and determining by intersections their relative positions, instead of reading off the angles on graduated instruments and afterward plotting the lines by means of a protractor, as is done in other methods of surveying. The practice with the plane-table has in this respect a great advantage in directness and precision. The measurement of distances and of vertical angles are used, in conjunction with the method of intersections, to obtain all the data for representing the horizontal and vertical features on the map, which is drawn in the field with pencil, the details being filled in according to established conventional signs. The plane-table of the Coast Survey (see Sketch No. 30) is composed of a well-seasoned drawing-board, with beveled or rounded edges, about thirty inches in length, twenty-four in width, and three-quarters of an inch thick. It is commonly made of several pieces of white pine, tongued and grooved together, with the grain running in different directions to prevent warping. It is supported upon three strong brass arms, to which it is fastened by screws passing through4 treatise ON the plane-table. Instead of describing the instruments or their uses independently, each is described in that portion of the text in which its employment in field surveying is most prom inently mentioned. The tables are not brought together at the end of the volume, but each is placed in that portion of the text which relates to its use. The object is to produce a handy reference-book for use in the field, as well as a text-book for guidance in college instruction. It is believed that, by this arrangement, if a topograp'her in the midst of his field-work desires information on a special point, it can be found, with accompanying examples and tables, gathered together in one chapter or clearly indicated by cross-references. Again, the method of treatment usually followed in works of this class consists in, first, a description of the astronomic methods on which general map surveys must be based, and then a descrip tion of primary triangulation as a basis for the detailed topographic surveys which are finally described. I have re versed this order and have adopted the more natural method of commencing with the simplest operations and advancing gradually towards the most complex and refined. Each sub ject is treated in the same manner. It is believed that thework has. Thus been made especially useful to the inexpert topographer and the student. The volume consists, in fact, of three separate books or treatises: (i) Topographic Surveying, (2) Geodetic Survey ing, and (3) Practical Astronomy.. The first has been sub divided into three parts: Plane Surveying, Hypsometric Sur veying, and Map Construction; and these are preceded by a preliminary characterization of the relations existing between topographic, geographic, and exploratory surveys. This latter distinction is essentially arbitrary, as all are of a kind, and differ only in degree of detail and the consequent speed and generalization in procuring the field results. The general subject of Geodetic Surveying has been subdivided into Ter restrial Geodesy and Astronomic Geodesy, and the treatment of these differs but slightly in method of arrangement from that usually pursued. Part VII is devoted to such practical hints as it is believed will essentially aid those who have the organization and command of camping parties.
