The Mosaic Map of Madaba
Author: Herbert Donner
Publisher: Peeters Publishers
ISBN: 9789039000113
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
In the early 1880's dissension arose among the Muslim and Christian inhabitants of al-Karak, east of the Dead Sea. Up to that time the believers of both religions had lived peacefully together in the city. Problems arose and the Christians decicded to move. They were allowed to settle at Madaba. The government gave permission to build churches, but exclusively on those spots where churches had existed in Antiquity. The immigrants removed the debris from still partially visible foundation walls of the ancient churches. During this work they discovered in 1884 a marvelous mosaic map. It had been part of the floor of a large cathedral. The surviving fragments were roughly repaired and incorporated in the floor of the new St. George's church. It took nearly a hundred years and many admirers to have the map finally restored. This book is an introductory guide and can be a help to different kinds of people, such as visitors, students, and professors teaching first level archaeology, bible, and Umwelt. Numbers on the sketch included in the guide, refer the reader to appropriate information in the booklet. A colour reproduction of the map and a black/white sketch is included.

Minoan Realities
Author: Diamantis Panagiotopoulos
Publisher: Presses univ. de Louvain
ISBN: 2875881000
Category : Architecture, Minoan
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
What is the social role of images and architecture in a pre-modern society? How were they used to create adequate environments for specific profane and ritual activities? In which ways did they interact with each other? These and other crucial issues on the social significance of imagery and built structures in Neopalatial Crete were the subject of a workshop which took place on November 16th, 2009 at the University of Heidelberg. The papers presented in the workshop are collected in the present volume. They provide different approaches to this complex topic and are aimed at a better understanding of the formation, role, and perception of images and architecture in a very dynamic social landscape. The Cretan Neopalatial period saw a rapid increase in the number of palaces and 'villas', characterized by elaborate designs and idiosyncratic architectural patterns which were themselves in turn generated by a pressing desire for a distinctive social and performative environment.

Atlantis Destroyed
Author: Rodney Castleden
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134708793
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
Plato's legend of Atlantis has become notorious among scholars as the absurdest lie in literature. Atlantis Destroyed explores the possibility that the account given by Plato is historically true. Rodney Castleden first considers the location of Atlantis re-examining two suggestions put forward in the early twentieth century; Minoan Crete and Minoan Thera. He outlines the latest research findings on Knossos and Bronze Age Thera, discussing the material culture, trade empire and agricultural system, writing and wall paintings, art, religion and society of the Minoan civilization. Castleden demonstrates the many parallels between Plato's narrative and the Minoan Civilization in the Aegean. Fired by the imagination a new vision of Atlantis has arisen over the last one hundred and fifty years as a lost utopia. Rodney Castleden discusses why this picture arose and xplains how it has become confused with Plato's genuine account.

Trying Lives
Author: Carol Irene Duval
Publisher: FeedARead.com
ISBN: 9781788768900
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Trying Lives: A House Sitter's Tale is a gently humorous travel memoir about trying out different lifestyles, mainly through house sitting and swapping. Not quite ready to settle in any particular place, newly retired couple, Carol and Richard Duval, set out to find ways of travelling cheaply and sustainably. But they also wanted time to explore what other people in other places considered to be the good life. The recent unpredictable political landscapes in the UK and the US had given rise to much musing about the health of our societies, the environment, and about human nature in general. Were there universal principles underpinning how to live well - or badly? Their adventures allowed them to experience a variety of lives, leaving them with a treasure trove of memories - always amusing, often heart-warming, usually surprising, and at times a little uncomfortable. Whether caring for a friendly duck in Australia's hippy country or a dusty dog in Spain's olive groves; renovating a crumbling château in France or (nearly) joining the church choir an English village, their efforts were repaid in spades. The good life, though fragile, could be found anywhere. Readers will find plenty of tips on trying this way of travelling, what to look out for and importantly, what to avoid.
