Potato, a cool season crop, is planted in Northeast Florida in January when temperatures are cool. As the season progresses, daily temperatures and incidence of leaching rainfall events increase which can affect yield and quality. Nutrient runoff from potato production land has thought to have been primarily responsible for the non-point source pollution into the St. Johns River watershed. Best Management Practices (BMPs) for potato production in the TCAA have been implemented. With over 7,000 ha in potato production in the TCAA, the main concern with the implementation of the BMPs are to not compromise yield and quality. The experimental design in chapter 2 was a split-split design with four blocks. Planting dates (1-6) were main plots. The first split was the N rate (168 and 224 kg ha-1). The second split was potato variety, 'Atlantic' and 'Harley Blackwell'. The experimental design in chapter 3 was a split-split design with four blocks. Irrigation treatments were main plots at 0, 2, 4, 8, and 12 WAP (weeks after planting). The first split was the nitrogen source (AN or CRF). The second split was an additional side-dress fertilizer application. Optimal yields for the TCAA occurred over a 4 week period (early to late February) in a twelve week planting window. 'Harley Blackwell' demonstrated its effectiveness to produce quality tubers under conditions when air temperatures and leaching rainfall events stressed plants. IHN was triggered by rainfall and nutritional conditions that stressed the plant early in the season combined with increasing minimum daily temperatures later in the season. Marketable yields in the CRF treatments were an average of 12% higher compared with the AN fertilizer treatment. The CRF treatments had a significantly higher incidence of tubers with IHN compared with the AN fertilizer treatment at 22.3 and 15.6%, respectively. NO3-N loading from surface water runoff from potato production was decreased an average of 43% with the use of the CRF compared with the AN fertilizer treatment. A CRF used in potato production, rather than a soluble N fertilizer, could reduce NO3-N loads into the St. Johns River watershed by 56,000 kg N per year.

The nutrient in-row movement study demonstrated that plants fertilized with polymer sulfur-coated urea (PSCU, 380 g N kg-1, Scott LLC) or polymer coated urea (PCU, 440 g N kg-1, Agrium INC) produced higher total and marketable yields than plants fertilized with urea formaldehyde (UF) products under leaching events. Leaching water samples collected from plots fertilized with PSCU had the highest NO3-N concentration and loads (24.4 mg L-1 and 12.4 kg ha-1) since N release of PSCU was less temperature sensitive resulting in high N release in the early season. These results would support the use of PCU over PSCU as a CRF. A 5 cm rainfall at early growth (20-25 cm) and full-flower growth stages reduced soil NO3-N concentration below the sufficient range (tuber initiation: greater than 20 mg kg-1; tuber bulking: 15~20 mg kg-1), resulting in yield losses. This indicated that plants fertilized with CRFs at 196 kg N ha-1 with two potential leaching events during growing season required supplemental N to avoid yield losses during a 100 day growth season.

This delayed resulted in no significant difference in yield in 2012. A relationship was found between total daily water use (as measured with sap flow) and soil moisture showing the efficacy of using soil moisture as a tool for efficient irrigation scheduling. This study shows the potential for a reduced irrigation schedule as a viable option for Florida potato growers and as a sustainable management option for potato production.

In Southern Manitoba, potato producers are experiencing wetter and drier conditions within the soil profile during the growing season leading to poor quality and inconsistent yields. Russet Burbank Potato cultivar was grown in Southern Manitoba on fine sandy loam soil in a two year (2013-2014) study using two water management treatments: (i) overhead irrigation and (ii) no-irrigation. The main objectives of the study were (i) to assess the impact of overhead irrigation on water table depth and potato yield (ii) to estimate the shallow groundwater contribution to potato water requirement through upward flux (iii) to track the nitrogen dynamics within the potato root-zone under overhead irrigation and no-irrigation scenarios (iv) to examine the effects of no-irrigation and overhead irrigation system at critical growth stages on marketable yield and quality of potatoes. In 2013, water was applied using a linear move irrigation system and in 2014 a rain gun irrigation system was used for the irrigated treatment. Volumetric soil water content, precipitation, irrigation depth, water table depth, nitrate concentration and electrical conductivity in potato root-zone, groundwater electrical conductivity, weather variables, total potato yield, marketable yield, and quality parameters were measured. The total yield was not significantly different between the two treatments in both years. The marketable yield of the irrigated treatment (36.89 MT/ha) was 20% higher (p = 0.017) compared to the non-irrigated treatment (30.74 MT/ha) in 2013. However, no significant difference was found between the irrigated (39.0 MT/ha) and non-irrigated (43.7 MT/ha) treatments in 2014. Potato yields from both treatments were significantly correlated with the average groundwater depth. Water balance analysis within the root-zone during rainy and rain-free periods showed that nitrate rich groundwater may have contributed to some of the crop water demand. The lack of rainfall and high temperature during tuber initiation and tuber bulking stages resulted in the accumulation of high concentration of nitrates within the root-zone by the late release of nitrates from the polymer-coated urea and the upward migration of groundwater containing 55 ppm and 70 ppm of nitrates in the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons, respectively. Overhead irrigation was found to be economically advantageous to produce better quality potatoes with higher marketable yields.
