Book Description
It's the fall of 1998, and librarian Samantha Stewart is looking for a new job. After seeing an ad for a high-paying position at a company called Virtual Software that entails research and travel, Sam investigates the company and learns that its president has gone missing, and that it's currently being run by the vice-president Greg Parsons. Before Sam makes it to the interview, she's visited by a strange woman who introduces herself as Jane Oldsfield: a time traveler whose mission Greg Parsons is trying to prevent. Sam ignores the woman and goes on the job interview anyway. Soon, she finds herself involved not only with Greg Parsons, but also Philip Montmart, a chain-smoking detective with a vendetta for his wife's killer, and the time-traveling Oldsfield and her feline accomplice. Witnessing world events that have yet to happen in her lifetime, including 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, Y2K hysteria and the COVID pandemic, can Samantha figure out Oldsfield's plans?

Relative Optimization of Continuous-Time and Continuous-State Stochastic Systems
Author: Xi-Ren Cao
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030418464
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
This monograph applies the relative optimization approach to time nonhomogeneous continuous-time and continuous-state dynamic systems. The approach is intuitively clear and does not require deep knowledge of the mathematics of partial differential equations. The topics covered have the following distinguishing features: long-run average with no under-selectivity, non-smooth value functions with no viscosity solutions, diffusion processes with degenerate points, multi-class optimization with state classification, and optimization with no dynamic programming. The book begins with an introduction to relative optimization, including a comparison with the traditional approach of dynamic programming. The text then studies the Markov process, focusing on infinite-horizon optimization problems, and moves on to discuss optimal control of diffusion processes with semi-smooth value functions and degenerate points, and optimization of multi-dimensional diffusion processes. The book concludes with a brief overview of performance derivative-based optimization. Among the more important novel considerations presented are: the extension of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman optimality condition from smooth to semi-smooth value functions by derivation of explicit optimality conditions at semi-smooth points and application of this result to degenerate and reflected processes; proof of semi-smoothness of the value function at degenerate points; attention to the under-selectivity issue for the long-run average and bias optimality; discussion of state classification for time nonhomogeneous continuous processes and multi-class optimization; and development of the multi-dimensional Tanaka formula for semi-smooth functions and application of this formula to stochastic control of multi-dimensional systems with degenerate points. The book will be of interest to researchers and students in the field of stochastic control and performance optimization alike.

Linking the Computational Structure of Variance Adaptation to Biophysical Mechanisms
Author: Yusuf Ozuysal

Pages : 115
Book Description
Neurons have a limited dynamic range. To more efficiently encode the large range of natural inputs, neural circuits adapt by dynamically changing their output range as a function of the input statistics. Variance adaptation provides an informative example of this process, whereby neurons change their response characteristics as a function of variance of their input. When their input distribution changes, sensory systems shift and scale their response curves to efficiently cover the new range of input values and they focus on different segments of the frequency spectrum, for example by choosing to average out the noise in a low signal-to-noise ratio environment by low-pass filtering their input and sacrificing resolution. In multiple sensory systems, adaptation to the variance of a sensory input changes the sensitivity, kinetics and average response over timescales ranging from

Glycoanalysis Protocols
Author: Elizabeth F. Hounsell
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1592595626
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 263
Book Description
Now fully updated and considerably expanded, Glycoanalysis Protocols, 2nd ed., makes available to all protein scientists, and particularly those working with today's pharmaceuticals, the most advanced and reproducible glycoanalysis techniques currently in use. Developed by highly experienced carbohydrate chemists, biochemists, and physical chemists, these detailed, up-to-date, and proven analytical techniques cover the areas of glycoprotein macromolecular structural analysis, oligosaccharide profiling, lipid conjugate characterization, microorganism structure determination, and proteoglycan function. Special attention has been given to advanced analytical techniques in biotechnology during the production of recombinant glycoproteins and other therapeutics. Hailed as "indispensable" in its first edition, Glycoanalysis Protocols, 2nd ed., continues with vital, time-tested techniques addressing the needs of both biomedical researchers and protein macromolecular structural chemists. It will well serve all those starting work on the analysis of glycoproteins, as well as more experienced investigators seeking to augment their expertise.
