Book Description
How do you forgive when the wound is still open? People often ask Sarah, "How did you forgive your alcoholic mother?” How do you forgive someone who carelessly brushed aside your pain, who caused such destruction, and who doesn’t show remorse? How do you know when to stay and when to go? In The Complicated Heart, you will travel through Sarah's story with her, from age 14 and beyond, as she wrestles with these very questions. Prepare yourself: she holds nothing back. If you’ve struggled with a difficult relationship, if you’ve felt torn-up and crazy and confused because of it, if you just want to know how to move forward and be okay, this story is for you. Dysfunction does not have to be your destiny or your identity. Victory is on the table. What's more: you’ll not only travel with Sarah, you’ll travel with her mom as well as you read her mom’s journal entries and letters. What goes on in the mind of the person who hurt you the most? In this story, you’ll get a rare peek into that mind and heart. In these pages you'll be reminded that light always finds a way in, even in the deepest darkness, and redemption and joy are possible in the midst of trauma and unmet needs. If you want to learn how to forgive when your wound is still open, heal when circumstances don't change, and become a generational bondage-breaker, The Complicated Heart is for you. And if not for you, for someone you know. Pass it along.

All the Light We Cannot See
Author: Anthony Doerr
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1476746605
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 560
Book Description
*NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti* Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Saying and Doing in Zapotec
Author: Mark A. Sicoli
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350142174
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
A multimodal ethnography of language as living process, this book demonstrates methods for the integrated analysis of talk, gesture, and material culture, developing a fresh way to understand human language through a focus on jointly achieved social actions to which it is part. Based on findings from a participatory, multimedia language documentation project in a highland Zapotec community of Oaxaca, Mexico, Mark A. Sicoli brings together goals of documentary linguistics and anthropological concern with the everyday means and ends of human social life with theoretical consequences for the analysis of linguistic and cultural reproduction and change. This book argues that resonances emergent in the whole of multiparticipant, multimodal interaction, are organizational of human social-cognitive process important for understanding both the shape linguistic utterances take in interaction (dialogic resonance) and the relationships built between distinct sign modes (intermodal resonance). In this way, Saying and Doing in Zapotec develops a new theory, characterizing the logic of resonance in human interaction as semiotic process that connects and juxtaposes interactional moves into assemblages of relations, resonances and collaborations that build an emergent lifeworld for a language.

Walking the Mona Lisa
Author: Jim Simpson
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1493176587
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 118
Book Description
Walking the Mona Lisa is a true story, although you may not believe some parts. I was there and sometimes I don’t believe it. It’s an attempt to chronicle the life of a devoted, compassionate, and gifted golden retriever, and the affect she had on those around her, specifically me. Two family tragedies had left me bitter and alone, and I was convinced I would remain that way for the rest of my life. Then Ilsa came along and all that changed. Ilsa was purebred golden who came from essentially dog royalty. Her grandfather was Topbrass Cotton who was a National Amateur Field Trial Champion, the equivalent of a Master’s or Wimbledon winner. She grew to become a world-class retriever in her own right, and had I trained her differently I’m sure she could have won numerous field trials. At first I didn’t recognize Ilsa’s full potential. That didn’t happen until I met my wife, who has a wonderful understanding of dogs. With her help Ilsa grew to become a serenely confident, appreciative and giving being. Ilsa rapidly grew into a reliable, hard-working, enthusiastic and willing hunting companion. She was doing things at 6- and 8-months old which other dogs wouldn’t be able to do until they were 2 or 3 years old. Multiple retrieves were no problem since she trusted me implicitly; if I told her there was something to retrieve she believed me and gave it her best. By the time she was 5 she was better than most hunting dogs would ever be; she rarely flushed birds out of range, she didn’t fidget in the blind so as to scare away decoying birds, and she never gave up. With Marcy’s tutelage, I quickly realized we needed to reward Ilsa in special ways since she was such a special being. I had been taking her everywhere with me before I met Marcy, including to work and on an extended road trip, but Marcy convinced me she deserved more. We started to give her special food treats such as homemade dog biscuits of various flavors, dried fruit and frozen yogurt. In addition she was a co-host at all our parties, and our friends came to expect Ilsa to greet them at the door. Ilsa had had a profound effect on me; I had changed from a grumpy, lonely man to someone who once again reveled in the beauties of nature and the simpler things in life. Because of Ilsa I was able to welcome Marcy into my life (and Ilsa’s) and we became “The Three Sweeties”. And we continued to show Ilsa our appreciation by including her in everything we did, including our wedding. She also got to travel with us whenever possible, so that when she died she had swum in both oceans, stayed in 4-star hotels, traveled by private train car, limousine and horse-drawn carriage, and had parties thrown in her honor. In so many ways Ilsa was much more than just a dog. She was an integral part of our lives and she had a say in most everything we did. Her legacy lives on in our hearts and minds. I will always cherish every moment I had with her.
