Excerpt from Through the Year With the Poets Very slight are the changes which mark the end of one month and the beginning of another, as Nature moves sedately through the shining pathway of the year, and August seems at first very like the July which precedes it. Still there are differences. The crickets chirp more loudly; the locust's note, herd now and then before, becomes persistent; here and there hang yellow leaves among the green; the evenings have lengthened, and sometimes at sunset the air grows chill.
