Three-dimensional thin boundary-layer equations for laminar and turbulent flows are solved by two different numerical schemes. The methods are applied to the flow over bodies of revolution at incidence and the results are compared with the available experimental data in order to study the range of validity of the classical boundary-layer approximations in regions of increasing circumferential gradients and flow reversal associated with the early stages of a free-vortex type of separation. Comparison with the DFVLR 6:1 spheroid data of Meier et al and the 4:1 combination-body data of Ramaprian, Patel and Choi indicate that the methods perform well in regions where the boundary layer remains thin but the predictions deteriorate as the boundary layer thickens. The results point out the need for the development of methods of handle thick boundary layers and viscous-inviscid interactions. (Author).

The IUTAM Symposium on Three-dimensional Turbulent Boundary Layers was suggested by the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathe­ matik (GAMM) and sponsored by the International Union of theor­ etical and Applied Mechanics. The symposium was organized by H.H. Fernholz (Hermann-Föttinger-Institut für Thermo- und Fluiddynamik der Technischen Universität Berlin) and E. Krause (Aerodynamisches Institut der RWTH Aachen). After two success­ ful Euromech Colloquia on the same topic in Berlin 1972 and Trondheim 1975 the organizers felt that another meeting should be convened, this time with participants from inside and out­ side Europe. The aim of the symposium has been to bring together scientists who are actively engaged in boundary layer research, both ex­ perimental and theoretical. The scope of the meeting encompass­ ed incompressible and compressible three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers. Special emphasis was laid on economical cal­ culation methods, on measurements of fluctuating quantities and on measuring techniques designed for and applied success­ fully to three-dimensional boundary layers. From among thirty-four papers submitted for presentation, twenty­ six contributions of twenty-five minutes each were selected by the European mernbers of the Scientific Committee. Furthermore there were four invited lectures of forty-five minutes. Short discussions were held directly after each presentation with a long discussion period at the end of each day. The final dis­ cussion on the last day of the symposium was recorded on tape and is presented in a slightly shortened version as the last contribution in this volume.

Three-dimensional perturbations on two-dimensional boundary layer flows are considered. First initially induced perturbations are studied and a general solution obtained. Second a specific externally induced perturbation is discussed. In both the streamwise velocity perturbation becomes infinite but the cross flow decays as downstream infinity is approached. This implies that the small cross flow approximation is a singular perturbation. The basis for this lies in the fact that the nature of the equations is changed by the approximation, viz., the zone of dependence property is lost.

This report contains papers presented to an AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel Round Table Discussion held in May 1984. The discussion was part of the Panel's Symposium devoted to Improvement of Aerodynamic Performance through Boundary Layer Control and High Lift Systems, reported in AGARD Conference Proceedings CP 365. The purpose of the discussion was to review recent progress in, and to provide guidance for future work in the field of 3-D boundary layers. Turbulence modelling, which is unsatisfactory in 2-D flows, is even less suitable for three-dimensional boundary layers. More sophisticated models do not appear to work better in many cases than simple ones. The situation is even less satisfactory for separated flows where the validity of certain computations is in question. Lack of accurate, extensive data hampers efforts to comprehend important flow mechanisms and validate computational results. The extensive review reported at the conference and in this discussion is remarkable in the paucity of high-quality experimental data cited.
