Most analyses of the gender gaps in landownership are based on one or a few countries in which little discussion is provided of the institutional context. Yet, the institutions within a given context will certainly influence both men’s and women’s landownership. In this paper, we analyze data from individual men and women respondents to the Demographic and Health Surveys in 45 low- and middle-income countries combined with 28 indicators at the national level of relevant institutions. To measure the associations with institutions, we use indicators of the structure of the economy, land market efficiency, women’s labor force participation, education of women and girls, gender equality, women’s property rights, social norms, marital property rights and inheritance, women’s political voice, and the extent of indigenous and communal property in the country. We do not find a clear association between higher GDP and structural transformation in the economy and a smaller gender land gap. This suggests that economic growth and development alone will not resolve the gender land gaps. The indicators that proxy for more gender equality in the labor force, educational attainment, and legal and social norms are all associated with a lower gender gap in landownership.

It provides a comprehensive analysis of the available evidence on gender equality and women’s empowerment in agrifood systems that has been produced over the last decade. Quotas for women in government have swept the globe. Yet we know little about their capacity to upend entrenched social, political, and economic hierarchies. Women, Power, and Property explores this question within the context of India, the world's largest democracy. Brul employs a research design that maximizes causal inference alongside extensive field research to explain the relationship between political representation, backlash, and economic empowerment. Her findings show that women in government - gatekeepers - catalyze access to fundamental economic rights to property. Women in politics have the power to support constituent rights at critical junctures, such as marriage negotiations, when they can strike integrative solutions to intrahousehold bargaining. Yet there is a paradox: quotas are essential for enforcement of rights, but they generate backlash against women who gain rights without bargaining leverage. Property as a human rights concern is manifested through its incorporation in international instruments and as a subject of the law through property-related cases considered by international human rights organs. This book examines water security as a prime example of how the economic, socio-cultural and political-normative systems that regulate access to water reflect the evolving and gendered power relations between different societal groups. Access to water is characterized by inequalities: it depends not only on natural water availability, but also on the respective socio-political context. It is regulated by gender-differentiated roles and responsibilities towards the resource, which are strongly influenced by, among others, tradition, religion, customary law, geographical availability, as well as the historical and socio-political context. While gender has been recognized as a key intervening variable in achieving equitable water access, most studies fail to acknowledge the deep interrelations between social structures and patterns of water use. Proof of these shortcomings is the enduring lack of data on water accessibility, availability and utilization that sufficiently acknowledges the relational nature of gender and other categories of power and difference, like class and socioeconomic status, as well as their comprehensive analysis.
