Specifications and a technical manual are presented for (1) a visual metal film matchbook corrosion indicator, (2) a visual thin metal film plug corrosion indicator, and (3) electrical resistance type corrosion indicating systems for packaging, consisting of a corrosion meter system and a visual alarm system. The matchbook corrosion indicator is a device for visually indicating the presence of a corrosive atmosphere in a sealed unit (chest, package, container, cabinet or housing) or in a relatively closed environment such as a warehouse or storeroom. The visual thin-metal-film plug corrosion indicator is for determining the corrosiveness of the atmosphere contained within a rigid container or a flexible moisture-vapor-proof envelope or bag. The electrical resistance type corrosion indicating systems are for remotely detecting the presence of a corrosive atmosphere within a sealed package containing equipment in storage, or in a relatively closed environment such as a warehouse or storeroom.

Corrosion of thin-film aluminum and gold under defect-containing passivation layers of phosphorus-doped SiO2 and plasma-deposited silicon nitride was investigated. Metal test patterns with corresponding passivation patterns, including deliberate passivation defects, made it possible to measure both corrosion current and corrosion rate. Measurements were done as a function of relative humidity and temperature. Electrochemical bias techniques were used to determine the relative corrosion stabilities of various metallized substrates. Fluoride and chloride contaminants produced greatly accelerated corrosion reactions for aluminized films. Alloying aluminum films improved their corrosion stability. The H2 in the forming gas ambient during alloying further improved the corrosion stability. Measurements of film stress versus corrosion stability did not correlate well. However, films under compressive stress may exhibit an improved corrosion stability. Fluorescent pH indicators were tested as a method of decorating IC devices. On aluminized IC devices in the presence of bias, some indicators exhibited fluorescence at localized sites. The effect on corrosion current of various surface treatments such as heating, etching, storage, and surface chemical modification were examined. Application of hexamethyldisilazane reduced surface currents by a factor varying from 100X to 1000X. (Author).

Research was reviewed to establish the degree of sensitivity of electrical resistance corrosion indicators and their applicability to the evaluation of corrosion-preventive oils and compounds. Laboratory work conducted under carefully controlled conditions indicated a high degree of sensitivity utilizing thin film indicators. Exposed specimens which exhibited no corrosion when examined visually provided small resistance changes of 1% to 5% by careful electrical measurements during the same period. Although each individual electrical indicator detected corrosion, variation in response or lack of reproducibility indicated an undesirable factor for use in field tests. The adaptation of the corrosometer, originally designed to utilize probe type specimens, to a glass slide having a thin metal film, provided a high degree of sensitivity. Satisfactory results could be obtained only after a thorough check of the electronic system and elimination of variables in the procedure.
