Book Description
The theory of distributions of Laurent Schwartz may be regarded as a study of the operators [partial symbol]/[partial symbol]x[subscript]i on Euclidean space. In the present paper we should like to shoe in what manner the methods of Schwartz can be extended to a much more general class of functional operators, which act on functions defined on a locally compact space R which is denumerable at infinity.

Lie Algebras and Lie Groups
Author:
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821812149
Category : Lie algebras
Languages : en
Pages : 65
Book Description
The American Mathematical Society, with the financial support of the National Science Foundation, held its First Summer Mathematical Institute from June 20 to July 31, 1953. The topic chosen was Lie theory, twenty-nine mathematicians active in this area attended. The six-week period provided opportunity both for the interchange of ideas and for the subsequent shaping of ideas into theorems. The five papers present some results achieved by the participants.--Foreword.

Characterization of Probability Distributions on Locally Compact Abelian Groups
Author: Gennadiy Feldman
Publisher: American Mathematical Society
ISBN: 1470472953
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
It is well known that if two independent identically distributed random variables are Gaussian, then their sum and difference are also independent. It turns out that only Gaussian random variables have such property. This statement, known as the famous Kac-Bernstein theorem, is a typical example of a so-called characterization theorem. Characterization theorems in mathematical statistics are statements in which the description of possible distributions of random variables follows from properties of some functions of these random variables. The first results in this area are associated with famous 20th century mathematicians such as G. Pólya, M. Kac, S. N. Bernstein, and Yu. V. Linnik. By now, the corresponding theory on the real line has basically been constructed. The problem of extending the classical characterization theorems to various algebraic structures has been actively studied in recent decades. The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive and self-contained overview of the current state of the theory of characterization problems on locally compact Abelian groups. The book will be useful to everyone with some familiarity of abstract harmonic analysis who is interested in probability distributions and functional equations on groups.

Functional Analysis and Approximation
Author: P.L. Butzer
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3034893698
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 461
Book Description
These Proceedings form a record of the lectures presented at the interna tional Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation held at the Ober wolfach Mathematical Research Institute, August 9-16, 1980. They include 33 of the 38 invited conference papers, as well as three papers subsequently submitted in writing. Further, there is a report devoted to new and unsolved problems, based on two special sessions of the conference. The present volume is the sixth Oberwolfach Conference in Birkhauser's ISNM series to be edited at Aachen *. It is once again devoted to more significant results obtained in the wide areas of approximation theory, harmonic analysis, functional analysis, and operator theory during the past three years. Many of the papers solicited not only outline fundamental advances in their fields but also focus on interconnections between the various research areas. The papers in the present volume have been grouped into nine chapters. Chapter I, on operator theory, deals with maps on positive semidefinite opera tors, spectral bounds of semigroup operators, evolution equations of diffusion type, the spectral theory of propagators, and generalized inverses. Chapter II, on functional analysis, contains papers on modular approximation, interpolation spaces, and unconditional bases.

Distribution Theory
Author: Gerrit Dijk
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110298511
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
The theory of distributions has numerous applications and is extensively used in mathematics, physics and engineering. There is however relatively little elementary expository literature on distribution theory. This book is intended as an introduction. Starting with the elementary theory of distributions, it proceeds to convolution products of distributions, Fourier and Laplace transforms, tempered distributions, summable distributions and applications. The theory is illustrated by several examples, mostly beginning with the case of the real line and then followed by examples in higher dimensions. This is a justified and practical approach, it helps the reader to become familiar with the subject. A moderate number of exercises are added. It is suitable for a one-semester course at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level or for self-study.

Fourier Analysis of Unbounded Measures on Locally Compact Abelian Groups
Author: Loren N. Argabright
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821818457
Category : Abelian groups
Languages : en
Pages : 61
Book Description
In harmonic analysis on a LCA group G, the term "Fourier transform" has a variety of meanings. It refers to various objects constructed in special ways, depending on the desired theory. The standard theories include the theory of Fourier-Stieltjes transforms, the Plancherel theorem, and the Bochner theorem can be viewed as another aspect of this phenomenon. However, except for special cases, we know of no attempt in the literature to undertake the desired synthesis. The purpose of the present work is to give a systematic account of such an attempt.
