Book Description
Excerpt from The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, Vol. 12 of 20 Dec, 1. 4 P.M. - To Cliffs. We may infer that every withered culm of grass or sedge, or weed that still stands in the fields, answers some purpose by standing. Those trees and shrubs which retain their withered leaves through the winter - shrub oaks and young white, red, and black oaks, the lower branches of larger trees of the last-mentioned species, hornbeam, etc., and young hickories - seem to form an intermediate class between deciduous and evergreen trees. They may almost be called the ever-reds. Their leaves, which are falling all winter long, serve as a shelter to rabbits and partridges and other winter quadrupeds and birds. Even the little chickadees love to skulk amid them and peep out from behind them. I hear their faint, silvery, lisping notes, like tinkling glass, and occasionally a sprightly day-day-day, as they inquisitively hop nearer and nearer to me. Book Description
Excerpt from Thoreau's Thoughts: Selections From the Writings of Henry David Thoreau IN selecting the following passages from Thoreau's printed works, for the use of those who are already interested in him, and to win, if possible, new admirers of what has given me so pure and unfailing a satisfaction for now more than forty years, I desired to make a pocket volume, contain ing beautiful and helpful thoughts, which one might not only read in retirement, but use as a traveling companion, or wa'e me cum, while waiting at a hotel, railway sta tion, or elsewhere, something even more convenient and ready at hand than the newspaper. I would furnish an antidote to the dissipating, depressing influence of too much newspaper reading, something which instead of filling the mind with gos. Book Description
Excerpt from The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, Vol. 4: May 1, 1852 February 27, 1853 The smell of our fresh meadows, from which the flood has in some measure receded, reminds me of the scent of salt marshes, to which it corresponds. A coarse grass is starting up, all the greener and more luxuriant for the freshet, one foot high. I hear a new kind of stertorous sound from the meadow; a new frog? The flowers (male) of the maple by the bridge are all dried up, and its buds are just expanding into leaves, while red maples are in their flowering prime. I find by the leaves that this is probably a white maple. The purple finch is come to Minott's neighborhood. I saw it. I rarely see it elsewhere than about R. W. E.'s. Are they not attracted hither by his fir trees? (i think it was not the tree sparrow which I used to hear in rainy weather.) E. Wood, Senior, says it was in 1818 the river was so high, and that Sted. Buttrick marked it, but thinks the last flood an inch or two higher. Wood has observed that the North River will rise first, and he has seen the South Branch flowing up-stream faster than ever he saw it flowing down. Tells a story of barrels that floated once from where Loring's factory is to the old Lee or Barrett house meadow. Book Description
Excerpt from The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, Vol. 4: Cape Cod and Miscellanies IN the same year as The Maine Woods, but as a Christmas book dated 1865, appeared Cape Cod, also edited by William Ellery Channing and published by Ticknor Fields. The first four chapters of the book had already been printed by their author in Put nam's Magazine in 1855, and chapters v and viii were printed, just in advance of publication in the book, in The Atlantic Monthly in October and December, 1864. Thoreau has recorded his adventures in this book, and shows that he enjoyed the humor which attended his intercourse with the independent, self-reliant folk of What was then more than now a singularly isolated arm of the State. Mr. Charming adds, in his book on Thoreau, One of the old Cod could not believe that Thoreau was not a pedler; but said, after explanations failed, Well, it makes no odds what else it is you carry, so long as you carry truth along with you.' It should be borne in mind by the reader that a considerable part of this book never received its final revision at the hands of its author.
