Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D.D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 6 of 19 Dean into England, with an intention to publish them. But lord Bolingbroke, on whose judgment be relied, dissuaded him from that design. He told the Dean, there were several facts he knew to be false, and that the whole was so much in the spirit of party-wntmg, that though it might have made a seasonable pamphlet in the time of the admlnistration, it was a dishonour to just history. It is to be observed, that the treasurer Oxford was the hero of the story. The Dean would do nothing against his friend's judgment, yet it extremely chagrined him; and he told a common friend, that since lord Bolingbroke did not ap prove his h1story, he would cast It 11110 the fire, though it was the best work he had ever wruten. However, It did not undergo this fate, and is sa1d so be yet 111 being. Warburton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D.D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 12 of 19: Arranged by Thomas Sheridan, A. M., With Notes, Historical and Critical These and similar passages contain a great deal of wild and violent invective against mankind, which has been perhaps too hastily adopted as expressive of Swift's actual sentiments. It ought, however, to be remembered, that if the Dean's principles were misanthropical, his practice was benevolent. Few have written so much with so little view either to fame or to profit, or to aught but benefit to the public. Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D. D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 23 of 24: With Notes, Historical and Critical We are ashamed to find so ill a taste prevail, as to make it a necessary work to do this justice to ourselves. It is very possible for any author to write below himself; either his subject not proving so fruitful, or fitted for him, as he at first imagined; or his health, or his hu mour, or the present disposition of his mind, unqualify ing him at that juncture: however, if he possessed any distinguishing marks of style, or peculiarity of think ing, there would remain in his least successful writings some few tokens, whereby persons of taste might disco ver, him. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D. D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 7 of 24: Arranged by Thomas Sheridan, A. M., With Notes, Historical and Critical His earnestness to communicate this history to the public is evident in many of his letters. In 1736, it was actually intended for the press; and in April, 1738, the Dean expressed his dissatisfaction at the publication being so long delayed. Whatever motives might have then existed for such delay, whether tenderness to living characters, or more prudential reasons, a period of forty years must totally have removed them. The rage of party is subsided; and we may be allowed to contemplate the reign of Anne as impartially as that of Elizabeth. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D. D. Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 6: Arranged by Thomas Sheridan, A. M. With Notes, Historical and Critical The counter-project of this treaty, made here at Lon {5 don, was bad enough in all conscience; I have said something of it in the preface; her majestys ministem were instructed to proceed by it in their negotiation; There was one point in that project, which'would have been of consequence to Britain, and one or two more where the advantages of the States were not so very ex orbitant, and where some care was taken of the house of Austria. Is it possible, that our good allies and friends could not be brought to any terms with us, unless by striking out every particular that might do as any good, and adding still more to those whereby so much was al-ii ready granted? For instance, the article about demo lishing of Dunkirk, surely might have remained; which was of some benefit to the States, as well as of mighty advantage tons; and which the French king has lately yielded in one of his preliminaries, although clogged with the demand of an equivalent, which will owe its difficulty only to this treaty.
